CHAPTER
FIFTEEN
I made a quick phone call to the professor, texted Cecylia my plans, and five minutes later, I was in the backseat of a car with a sixty-year-old Polish chauffeur named Josef. We chatted for a few minutes.
It was nice to speak Polish and not panic about it. When I first came to the US, hearing someone speaking Polish would send me into full on survival mode. My subconscious would take me back to the halls of the orphanage and a recitation state. Now, I feel normal-ish. It was difficult for some people to understand how a language could tie to a memory, just like the smell of a pumpkin pie reminded people in the United States of Thanksgiving or autumn. Echoic memory is just as powerful as any of the other senses. Our conversation wound down and Josef turned on the radio to rap.
âYou like this?â he said.
As expletives flew out of the speakers, I wanted to cover my ears.
âNo, I donât,â I said.
âMy apologies. I thought all young people like the rap. What would you like to listen to?â
âClassical, please.â
âAhhhh, that is more my taste as well!â
For the next twenty minutes, I leaned back in my seat and let the music wash over me. We pulled up in front of the professor's craftsman.
âI will wait here,â Josef said.
âNo, no, you donât need to just sit in the car. Please go get something to eat.â
âI brought a paper and a book. I will read.â
Jewel answered the door smiling. She was wearing a rust colored dress and matching heels. Her lips were a burnt orange. She looked like something out of a 1950s Hollywood movie. I wondered if she had her dresses tailored just for her.
âAdelina, please come in,â she leaned forward and hugged me. âLewis has some news for you!â
Jewel ushered me to the den where she had set up a tray with coffee and scones. Lewis, wearing a pewter gray three piece suit, stood to greet me. I suddenly felt underdressed.
âIâm sure Jewel has told you I have some news!â
âYes, she did,â I sat and Jewel served the coffee.
When we were all three seated and served, Professor Lewis said, âI was in a staff meeting yesterday with all of the English department. Dr. Verde seemed overly agitated. He asked for a sabbatical.â
âAnd thatâs good? That means he will be home with his wives twenty-four seven.â I said, sinking a little inside. Sabilia had sent Courtney back home, thinking a security system would keep her safe. Jan had asked me to help her and I had not done anything.
âWhatâs wrong?â Jewel asked.
âI have not helped anyone!â I shared my thoughts. âHow do these people get away with this sort of stuff?â
âYou mean immoral living?â
âYes, I guess.â
âItâs becoming more common in academic circles as well as on the world stage.â Lewis shook his head sadly. âThey use intellectualism in the academic world, to overpower anyone who questions their ethics. They call us traditionalists and archaic, as if our viewpoints are just that, our outdated opinions.
