Mina pulled them both into the shower and afterward heated up a can of soup for dinner, which Mina barely touched. She couldn’t stop thinking about her conversation with Kim. How completely weird it was. So weird, it was like it could not even be real. And that’s what worried her the most.

After dinner, Mina gave Emma her medicine and put her to bed. Emma clutched PP to her, sniffing gleefully at the bunny’s filthy ears, and dropped off into an easy sleep. Mina envied her so much for that. That something so small could take all her cares away.

Mina headed downstairs and opened a bottle of red wine. She filled a glass, intending to close the bottle before heading to bed, but decided instead to take both the glass and bottle upstairs with her. Stinky ears for grown ups.

Mina placed the glass and bottle on her nightstand. The remote in hand, she turned on the TV and realized the cable had been turned off. Again. She switched off the TV and decided she’d look for her tapes. She reached into her purse, and even turned it over on her bed when she couldn’t retrieve them. Nothing. “Dammit!” Mina said when she remembered she’d left them in Jack’s car, which was now parked God only knew where. In front of God only knew which hotel or sleazy motel . . .

She now had a vision of Jack, her Jack, naked in a by-the-hour room, splayed out on a heart-shaped bed next to a leggy brunette, also naked. Amber. Maybe she was a leggy redhead? And they seemed to be reviewing meeting notes.

She shook that image away. Just because she hadn’t heard from Jack didn’t mean he was cheating on her. Kim said he wasn’t, and the bank would know. But Kim also said to trust no one. Did she mean not to trust Kim either? And about what? About Jack not having an affair with this bosomy boss, Amber? About not trusting anyone else? It was all too confusing.

Mina poured more wine into her glass and noticed her notebook among the debris she’d spilled from her purse. She shrugged her shoulders and picked it up. She sat back in her bed, the soft down pillows sucking her into restful comfort. Her eyes felt heavy as she sipped her wine then flipped through the pages. The meaningless scribbles. The doodles. The dragonfly . . .

Mina was asleep, she guessed, for the next thing she knew, she was sitting in a large auditorium, lights flashing and music blaring. She could feel the light and the music pulsing within her, like it was all her very blood.

She sat by herself in an ocean of strangers. She didn’t recognize anyone else in the audience. The seat on her left was empty. To her right, a young woman was dancing and singing and started to jump wildly around, flailing her arms as if at a Grateful Dead concert.

Suddenly, the music changed. The seating area went completely dark and the audience began to cheer loudly and wildly.
