A night school classroom with sleepy students at the Seventh Avenue Lodging House at 34th Street, run by the Children’s Aid Society. The Society operated several lodging houses across the city that offered more than just a place to sleep. One reporter wrote “Here the homeless street boy, instead of drifting into thieves’ dens and the haunts of criminals and roughs, is brought into a clean, healthy, well warmed and lighted building where he finds room for amusement, instruction, and religious training, and where good meals, a comfortable bed, plenty of washing and bathing conveniences are furnished at a low price”—typically five or six cents per night.
