When Stathis’s game of tavli was over, he wandered slowly home, jangling his winnings in his pocket. The shops were beginning to close, and the butcher had just stepped outside to fetch in his advertising board.

‘Yassou, Stathis,’ he said.

Stathis was struck by a thought.

‘Do you have any lamb’s liver?’ he asked. ‘Fresh, not frozen.’

The butcher weighed him a quarter-kilo and wrapped it in waxed paper. Stathis carried the package home, afraid of what he’d find there, but Circe was where he’d left her, and wagged her tail weakly when he came in the door.

He crouched down and stroked her head.

‘How are you, my girl?’ he asked, and bent down to her so she could lick his face. ‘See what I brought you.’

He took one of the dirty dishes from the table, and with his pocket knife cut a slice of the bloody liver into pieces. Crouching down again, he offered a morsel to Circe. She sniffed, and turned her face away.

‘Come on, koukla,’ he said, offering it again. ‘It’s tasty, and good for you. It’ll make you strong.’

The dog sniffed at it again, and gently took it from him.

‘That’s my girl,’ he said, offering another piece. ‘That’s my good girl.’

Circe ate almost a whole slice of liver, and drank a little water. Seeing her improvement – and his win at tavli – had given Stathis some appetite too. The chicken stew Maritsa had made was waiting. Tearing off a piece of bread, he began to eat.
