Fourteen

A bright red cardinal swooped from the branch of a cottonwood tree and perched atop the wooden signpost that read “cabin 12” as Genevieve approached with a wagon filled with fresh linens, toiletries, flowers, and a fruit basket in tow. Helen followed behind her pushing a housekeeping cart loaded with a broom, a wet mop, a dust mop, trash bags, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. As the wheels rattled over the rocky ground, the bird flew off.

Genevieve opened the door, tugged her wagon inside, then turned to assist her sister in lifting the cart over the doorjamb. The cabin smelled just a little bit musty, so the first thing Genevieve did was open the windows over the sink in the kitchenette and in the bedroom. Then she and her sister each pulled on a pair of long yellow rubber gloves and prepared to go to work.

Jake had invited a woman to visit. Not just any woman, but the Thanksgiving pie woman. The Bennett sisters’ interest had been piqued with a capital P.

This was the sort of thing Lucas did all the time, but Jake—no. He rarely brought women around his family, even if it was only an hour overlap in flight times at the tiny airport in Durango, where one can’t exactly count on not being noticed. In that respect, this one probably shouldn’t qualify, but something about his attitude when he told her of Tess Crenshaw’s visit set his mother’s antennae quivering. This was no casual visit.

“I don’t know, Helen,” Genevieve said, scanning the interior of the cabin with a critical eye. “Maybe we should have gone with Cabin 7, after all.”

“No. This is good. It has the best view, and it’s closest to Jake. Let’s face it. She probably won’t spend any time here.”

“Do you think?”

“Of course I think. She’ll be with Jake. They’re vacationing together. Although after we do our thing, Twelve will be more much comfortable than One. Jake is neat for a guy, but he’s still a guy, and he hasn’t done anything to make his cabin cozy. No, they’ll likely sleep here.”

Genevieve’s thoughts veered away from her son’s sleeping arrangements. As his mom, she was very interested in his love life, but she’d just as soon not think about his sex life.

In fact, why was she thinking about his love life at all?

“Vacation, shmacation!” Frustration rolled over Genevieve like a tidal wave. “If Jake is on vacation, he should make a better effort at it. All he’s done since our trip up to Inspiration Point is work. He’s replaced three cracked sinks, set two new toilets, relocated a family of raccoons from Cabin 4, and patched the leak in Cabin 9’s roof!”

Helen shrugged. “Let’s not look a gift handyman in the mouth.”

Genevieve folded her arms and snapped. “It’s classic takeover Jake!”

“Whoa.” Helen braced her hands on her hips and frowned at her sister. “A minute ago, you were excited about sprucing this cabin up for Tess Crenshaw. What tripped your trigger?”

To Genevieve’s shock and dismay, tears suddenly pooled in her eyes.
