CHAPTER SEVEN
Difficult Wishes
The following day, Samrath guided Ethelinda to the flowers and sat her down in the most colorful section. He knew the flowers would be all bent and his father would be vexed, but he could deal with that later.
âI donât know if itâs possible, but I am going to try to heal you,â he said.
He bade her to lie down and close her eyes. Drawing in a shaky breath, he leaned down to kiss her eyelids. She giggled, but kept her eyes closed. His heart raced and his back prickled with cold sweat. He couldnât stand the thought that she might look at him with disgust, but he knew it was a possibility.
He brushed his fingertips over her eyelids and bathed her face with magic. From the way she shivered and touched her fingers to her forehead several times, he knew she must have felt something. He imagined her eyes healing and returning to their former healthy condition. When he finished, or he thought he was finished (he didnât know, as he usually didnât cure blindness) he retreated a few paces back and hid behind a tree. After a few moments, Ethelinda opened her eyes and gasped. She stared up at the blue sky through the trees.
Her voice was barely a whisper. âItâs so blue.â
She sat up and gazed around at the flowers. She reached out and touched a purple one, then a pink one next. She smelled a white one and then a red one. She had to smell and touch each one, as if they would have a different scent and texture because they were different colors.
Samrath cringed when she rolled in the flowers, but he didnât interrupt her. She giggled, then looked around.
He whistled, imitating a bird singing its song. He called the little blue bird down from the tree and it landed on her finger. Ethelinda stroked its feathery back. She tried to whistle, but that wasnât one of her talents. Samrath shook with silent laughter seeing her try and laugh at herself when she failed.
When the bird eventually flew back into the branches, she looked around. âSamrath, where are you?â
He hesitated, hating what might come next. But his father was right. He had to know. He made his way toward her and sat down by her side.
For the first time ever she stared at him. He tried to discern her expression. Her lips parted and eyes grew wide. She seemed to be holding her breath. A thrill of pleasure tingled up his spine as she smoothed her fingers over the scales of his arm. âYouâre green and yellow and blue and there are so many colors on your skin.â She leaned forward, examining his face, her breath whispering across his cheek. âI had no idea green could be so beautiful.â
She ran her fingers through the leaves on his head and this time they didnât hurt her. They were soft and fuzzy now. She examined the birdâs nest in his antler. No birds rested in it at the moment, but he knew she would soon see them too.
