Interlude: Historical Theology

I have been following an overarching outline of exegesis, theology, and doctrine: Part One, Part Two, and doctrine should follow here. Soon. But before I do, I want to insert an interlude. In doing so I am positioning this material as a conclusion to the theological section and as an introduction to the doctrinal section. Of course, historical theology could be placed alongside biblical theology. Yet, in this instance, in this particular investigation of historical theology, I want to consider the specific effect that the Reformation had on our understanding of marriage as (or not as!) a sacrament. From this will follow my proposal that we reconsider that move, reversing it. And also, speaking specifically to my evangelical brothers and sisters, I would restore marriage, not as an ‘ordinance’, but as a ‘sacrament’. To do so, I will redefine sacrament, but faithfully grounded in its historical roots. This proposal will colour, though not dominate, the investigation of the doctrine of marriage, the drama that the Spirit intends for us to engage as the people of God. For that reason, because it is both ‘theology’ and ‘doctrine’, I want to give it a transitional place, between (biblical) theology and doctrine.
