CHAPTER 8
THE FOUNDATION OF SANCTUARY WORSHIP
There was no greater worshiper in the Old Testament for me than David. His worship was passionate and personal, but also prophetic and profound. His pursuit of worship should be the inspiration of every worshiper today. He created a picture of what sanctuary worship looks like and how to maintain it. Holding to his precedent would serve the Church well today.
Sanctuary worship for us today comes by virtue of a few congruent spiritual components that need to be understood in their context. The first thing that must be understood about this era of worship is that it is unique from all of the other periods because we worship in the era in which Christ has already died for the sins of the world. No other era engaged in worship in this context. In each of the previous eras, the corporate worship stood on unsure ground because the worshipers did not have the guarantee or confidence to know for sure that their worship would be accepted.
Prior to Christ, it was always a wait-and-see experience. Will YHWH answer by fire? Will He give us a sign of acceptance? Will Adonai be merciful in light of our sin? On several occasions, the children of Israel said, in essence, to Moses, âYou go and speak to Him, lest His anger burn against us!â Old Testament worship was always characterized by a few instances of the Lord not accepting what was offered. The picture of this goes back as far as Cain and Abel. However, that context has been removed from the equation since the blood of Jesus has been shed on our behalf. We know that the blood was accepted once and for all on behalf of all of humankind and has provided access to the Father through faith and trust in Christ the Lamb of G-d. With this reality as a component of sanctuary worship, we are a part of the only era that has been given guaranteed access to the Father through worship.
The second component that must be considered is the active participation of the Holy Spirit within the temple (body) of the worshiper. Whereas prior to the coming of the Holy Spirit the worshipers had to go to a location where they would have an interaction with the Spirit of G-d, now the Holy Spirit has been given as a guarantor to the saints to aid and enable them in their personal and corporate worship experiences. This means that even when I am away from the physical sanctuary, I can still engage in personal worship in another location as needed or as prompted by the unction of the internally dwelling Holy Spirit. The other eras of worship did not have this as a component of their corporate or personal worship experience.
Now when people come to the corporate worship experience, they could or should have been engaged in a personal worship experience at home or in their car as they traveled. So when they enter the sanctuary
