Chapter 23

“The plan remains the same,” I reminded her as we stood before the veil of the formation. “Use the amulet and hide if a fight breaks out. Forget what you’ve learned here and don’t you dare help me. You’re only a Warrior, and you can’t help me in battle.”

“But I can patch you up,” she muttered.

Smiling, I found myself sliding a finger down my cheek, where there were two less scars. Reika had all the right to be proud of herself. And I’d never tell her how many Hands I had spent on them.

As before, I was the first to step through the formation. I froze, half here, half over there, listening to my instincts and feeling no danger. I put my hand back behind the veil without the Companion and squeezed Reika’s fingers, pulling her through. There was silence again. I bowed to the doorway, above which the phoenix still burned, visible only to me.

The Battlefields were the bleached skeletons of cities where the Ancients and their spirits lost to the cultists. No one would answer me here or laugh and wish a young and foolish Shen to come again. It was a miracle that we even found this place. And it was an even bigger miracle that allowed me to bring a guest with me.

As expected, there was no answer. There was no second miracle.

We walked silently through the empty corridors. Here and there, I saw the footprints of those who had followed us. But only footprints, and already covered with dust. But as we stepped onto the slabs of the courtyard, there was a flash and we were surrounded by a transparent, gray barrier that covered us like a bowl.

Worst of all, I felt no danger and noticed nothing, though I had just taken ten breaths to look around. But now, trapped, I could clearly see the ten flags arranged in a circle along the walls of the courtyard.

Reika groaned, clutching at my elbow.

“It’s all right,” I whispered as calmly as I could and unhooked her fingers from me. “Remember to use the amulet.”

As soon as she turned invisible, I touched the barrier with the Companion’s tip.

Energy surged through the meridians, filling the constellation to the brim.

The Star Blade glowed brightly, compressed to the limit, and struck the formation. The dome resisted for a moment, but my blow was stronger. The shining needle pierced the barrier, lengthened, and touched the nearest flag, cutting it in two. Immediately, the formation shattered, showering Reika and me with melted shards of spiritual energy. A bright flame shot up into the sky over the ruins of the Sentinel Hall.

Still invisible, Reika groaned five paces away from me.

“Again?”

“As you can see,” I groaned.

I noticed that this technique was different from both my Signal and the one the Swords were using. Either way, this meant that either whoever had placed the formation was nearby, or someone who had been put here to signal our arrival to their companions.

“Follow me,” I ordered sternly.

I darted to the edge of the wall, to the side where the fire came from.
