I could have struck on further, but found myself mesmerised by Nam-tso itself, and so moved back towards it, where I sat down at the edge and breathed in the air thick with salt. Around me were miniature towers made from pebbles, as tall as my knee and as fragile as life. These were handmade, easily erected chortens, a three-dimensional symbol as sacred in Buddhism as Christianity's cross, and a common feature of Buddhist architecture (known as stupas outside of Tibetan Buddhism), which appears in all temples, monasteries and shrines. But these were made by pilgrims: nomads and peasants without the money for grandiose structures, who build them as their own temples-in-miniature. Wherever the land is stony and traversed in Tibet, there will be thousands of these tiny, impromptu chortens.
