When you die, how will people remember you?

In the film Gladiator, General Maximus tells us that “what we do in life echoes in eternity.” I believe this is a promise and a warning. None of us want to be remembered as being greedy, rude, or violent. Perhaps worse, none of us want to be forgotten. Each of us hopes to be remembered, particularly in a positive light.

Think about the life you are currently living. If you were to die suddenly, what might people say at your funeral? People might say you were a good kid, that you really loved reading books on friendship, and that you died too soon. But will they say the things you really want them to say?

“What an amazing friend!” “He came and visited me every day while I was in the hospital.” “She listened to my problems and helped me get my life together.” “She was so smart and funny, I loved her puns.” “Dad was such a great man. He made me into the person I am today.” “I’m really, really going to miss her.”

Live your life knowing that your actions echo long after you are gone and know that you have the power to choose what memories echo the loudest. As you find your true north, those memories might be your intended destination.
