Brent had said that he’d spoken to Scott, who admitted his affair with Amber but denied harming Laci, and we sat around the rest of the night fuming at his lies. The next day’s Modesto Bee reported that we no longer supported Scott, and our change was accompanied by new facts: he’d had an affair (Amber’s name, even in the National Enquirer, was not yet public) and he’d taken out a $250,000 life insurance policy after Laci got pregnant. It also noted the volunteer center had shut down.

Chief Wasden, speaking for the police, refused to comment on the investigation. Ironically, Scott talked to a reporter on the record.

“I really don’t care what people think of me as long as it continues to keep Laci’s picture, description, tip line in the media,” Scott said. “Make me the biggest villain if you want to, as long as it keeps her picture in the press. They can think anything they want of me. Let’s find Laci.”

Shortly after noon that day, I called Scott. I desperately wanted Laci home. I had to keep trying to get him to tell me where he put her. Despite such an awful conversation the previous day, I called and ended up leaving a message. I don’t know why, but he phoned back at one thirty.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Trying to get this volunteer center thing to happen in Los Angeles. Can’t believe they canceled it.”

“What do you mean you can’t believe they canceled it?” I said, amazed at the level of his denial or deception, I didn’t know which.

“Why can’t we have it?” he said. “We need to keep her picture out there and the volunteer center in Modesto—”

“You know, when are you gonna give up the charade, Scott? You know, when are you gonna call it quits and admit what you’ve done?”

“When I find my wife and child,” he said.

“Well, you’re the only one who knows where they are, so why don’t you fill the rest of us in so we can go get them?”

“Mom, I didn’t call you to—”

“Well, that’s the reason I called you.”

“Okay. Well—”

“I want you to tell me where Laci is,” I demanded. “I’m tired of your lies. I’m tired of your conniving. I’m tired of your manipulation. You know damn well they’re not opening a stupid center down there because you’ve embarrassed your family and everybody else.

“You’ve shamed this world, Scott,” I continued. “You’ve had people out looking for Laci and somebody else when you’ve known all along where she’s been. So tell me where she is. I want her back.”

“I know you won’t believe that I want her back also. That’s all I—”

“Oh, I’m sure you want her back, too,” I snapped sarcastically. “Yes, you’re brokenhearted. I know that, Scott. So now, just be honest with me, and tell me where she is.”

“I can’t listen to you tell me—”

“And I can’t listen to your fucking lies anymore.”
