• You should have financial planning meetings with your spouse every quarter. Depending on your situation, you may need to meet weekly or monthly until you develop steady state operations.

• Although there are a few different ways to manage joint finances, the best approach is for couples to merge all income into a joint account and then divide funds proportionally from there.

• Merging finances encourages financial discussions, improves trust, and helps partners align their financial goals.

A MILLION AND

ONE QUESTIONS

“Cats around my way was buying brand new whips and shit.” —Jay-Z

“We’re millionaires,” I told Zaira.

She chuckled at me and shook her head as if I were joking.

“No babe, for real,” I lifted the paper and showed it to her. “We are millionaires. Look at the numbers. Our net worth is over a million dollars.”

Zaira and I were having a financial planning meeting. For months I begged her to sit down with me to review our finances, but finances are a trigger for Zaira, and she will make any excuse she can to avoid discussing them. Generally, she is afraid that a budget is a way for me to control her. On this occasion, she finally agreed to spend an evening talking about finances. In exchange, I promised her that I would order her favorite Indian food for dinner afterward.

This was the first time we reviewed our finances together since our wedding two years earlier. A lot had changed since before we got married—we bought a house together, I was promoted at work, and Zaira’s business grew from $600,000 to $1.2 million in revenue. This meeting was long overdue.

I showed Zaira the sheet of paper. On the left side was a heading for assets and on the right side liabilities . In the asset section, I wrote the names and values of our bank accounts, condos, house, cars, and 401(k)s. In the liability section I listed our outstanding mortgage balances and debt. After I subtracted the liabilities from the assets, I underlined my answer twice and then put my pen down.

She looked over it for a few seconds then said, “No, you can’t add our mortgages.”

“I didn’t,” I said as I pointed at the column of addition and subtraction formulas. “Look, I added the property value here under assets, and added mortgage value here under liabilities, and here is where I subtracted liabilities from assets. ”

Zaira still doubted me. She opened up the calculator on her phone and started adding and subtracting the numbers herself. She went down the list, adding the assets in the left column—$280,000 for the condo in Orlando, $375,000 for the condo in Atlanta, $450,000 for the townhouse in Tampa, $15,000 for our car, our savings accounts, our 401(k)s, and other retirement accounts.

Then she subtracted the liabilities—three mortgage balances and $10,000 in credit card debt.

“One point zero four. I guess you were right,” she conceded.

I’m always right.

I sat back in the chair and looked at the numbers again. “Dude, that’s kind of a big deal. We’re millionaires.”

After our meeting, we ate dinner and continued on with our daily life.
