Your marriage is not something separate from your parenting. It is an integral part of it. Your marriage is the life source of your parenting. The daily regimen of parenting proposes an endless number of things to be done. The important word here is endless. Even if you got everything done that you thought fulfilled your role as a parent today, you would discover that there are still an endless number of things you could do for your child. That is never going to change. You could dedicate your whole life to helping your children grow and succeed in this world. Urgent things often dominate the life of a parent. We rush around doing urgent things all day long. The problem with this, of course, is that the most important things are hardly ever urgent. That is why it is so important for us to identify what the most important things are and place them at the center of our lives by giving them priority. Striving to become a-better-version-of-yourself is one of the most life-giving things we can give our time, focus, and energy to, but it will never be urgent. Living passionately and purposefully is never urgent, it can always be put off for one more day—and people put it off for a whole lifetime while they obsess over all the urgent stuff. In the same way, having a great marriage will never be urgent. If we needed a great marriage to survive in the same way we need air to breathe and water to drink, I suspect there would be a lot more great marriages around. But it is not urgent, and as such, too easy to put off for another day or another year.

The best things we can do for our children are almost never urgent. For this reason, from time to time we need to step away from all the seemingly urgent things in order to discover and attend to the things that matter most.
