Filio stumbled after Heinrich and the alien, with trembling knees and unsure movements. She wished to be as calm and certain as her crewmate, but he had either lost his mind or had been brainwashed. In any case, he no longer seemed to be afraid of their âhostâ and showed no signs of insecurity.
What surprised her most was the speed with which everything had happened. Only a few seconds had passed between the time when the alien had stuck the piece of metal to Heinrichâs forehead and the Germanâs first emotional speech on the alienâs behalf.
âWhere are we going?â she hissed to Heinrich, without turning her gaze away from the alienâs back.
âHortat is leading us to his private chamber.â
âWhy?â
âHe wants to answer your questions,â he explained, without turning around. They walked through a wide passage where she felt like a toy figure in a playhouse far too big for her, so high were the walls and ceilings. She could not make out any doors, and was therefore terrified when the huge muscular figure, who was striding in front of them like a living boulder, abruptly stopped. A rectangular doorway appeared in the wall as if it had always been there.
Hortat went ahead and Heinrich followed him without hesitation. Filio paused for a moment and looked right and left down the passage, but she could see only a few meters down either direction, as the lighting, which seemed to come from both everywhere and nowhere, apparently followed the alien and faded behind it.
What am I doing here? she asked herself, still not comprehending that all this was actually happening.
The room in which she now found herself was akin to the shape of an egg lying on one side, except that the floor was flat. When she entered, she would have sworn that the walls had moved to form its current shape, but it had happened so quickly that she wasnât sure that she wasnât imagining it.
When he reached the middle of the room, Hortat stopped and closed his eyes for a moment. The floor came to life a heartbeat later, causing Filio to jump back in horror. Three small columns rose from the black, seamless material as if they were composed of some sort of very thick liquid.
It didnât take long for the three columns to transform, two of them turning into smaller chairs with narrow backrests and the third becoming a much larger one. Each chair had only one leg. The legs looked so fragile that it seemed as if they must inevitably break under the weight of their seats. The rest of the room remained empty, windowless, and unadorned.
âSit,â the alienâs voice rumbled, and Filio froze as the deep, rolling voice spoke to her in fluent German and he pointed to one of the two smaller chairs. His pronunciation sounded a little strange because he stretched out the vowels. Except for that slight deviation, however, he spoke the language surprisingly well.
âHow... how did you do that?â Filio stammered in irritation.
