After gathering torches, ropes and some weapons, Gabioli and his men advanced towards the perimeter of the dreaded Ozzie.
The early autumn night was cool, but mild. A soft breeze danced with the forestâs primeval trees causing their branches to wave as if beckoning the group to enter the embrace of the sinister woods.
A long suppressed feeling of anxiety entering Gabioliâs soul. He had not been in the woods since his search for his son, Corin, over twelve years before. The old memories choked within his throat and for a moment he thought he might not be able to continue. However, the face of his sonâs child, Lijia, flashed before his eyes and his determination and strength immediately returned in full force not only for love of the child, but also for the safety of all Forkypeds, Gaje (non-gypsy) and Romany alike from the evil of the Boggarts.
The thorny bushes reached out and snagged the Romanyâs clothes and inflicted wicked cuts to arms and legs as if to dissuade the intruders from entering their secretive domain.
Once again, a huge lump formed in Gabioliâs throat and a sickening apprehension gripped his every sense. To an observer, however, he appeared as confident as ever; not a trace of his inner turmoil gave hint of itself.
âDo not let youâre your silent dread grab hold of you. Remember, Boggarts are experts at shape-changing and they ravenously feed on human fear and sometimes Romany and Gaje flesh!. Whatever it is we might shrink from most is what form the Boggart will take. We are the prey. Beware!â Gabioli directed his clan as he forged ahead, lantern held high lighting the way through the thick undergrowth.
Daylight was a memory as the moon rose to take its post. Bright and beautiful, it shone like a beacon casting shadows on both good and evil. Itâs light made it almost unnecessary for flashlights and torches, but the deeper one went into the dense bushes of the Ozzie, the less illumination was allowed to make its way through the heavy tree-top canopy.
Just as Gabioli and his group were advancing deeper within the confines of the mysterious Ozzie, Thomas Bromley had also entered from the property where his family home had been. He had chosen this path because he remembered the area from his childhood and although he was often chastised for defying his parentâs commands to say clear, the woods had always held a fascination to him. On one or two occasions when he was about ten, he was positive that someone or something had whispered his name. It had been on one such occasion that a huge black dog had appeared. Its glowing eyes and exposed drooling fangs had caused him to wet himself with fright. Just as the large beast started to move slowly towards him, a tiny frog had jumped in between them causing the animal to falter, back up and then disappeared into the darkness of the trees. It was after this terror-filled encounter that Thomas stopped entering the woods.
