CHAPTER 31
Sir Vetikk Gnar rode in a plush carriage drawn by two raptors controlled by a driver. With him rode the rest of his retinue. Four servants, two men at arms, six pike men, six bowmen and two raptor riders.
Sir Vetikk was an important Jekko from a very important family. And he had embarked on this trip in order to enhance his position at court.
He was going to visit his sister and her new brood master and husband, Baron Snart.
Not that Vetikk cared for either his shrew of a sister or the Baron. In fact, he couldnât stand either of them. Particularly the Baron, a boorish jumped up peasant who had inherited his title from his father, a great Jekko warrior from the day of the Great Crossing.
No, he was visiting because he had heard rumors that his vile sister had been acting up. While not quite disobeying her brood master, she had definitely been surly. Or so he had heard. And the family had sent Vetikk to the Baronâs estate so that he could officially give Baron Snart the familyâs permission to put aside the Rule of Thumb.
The rule stated that a brood master may not beat his wife with any staff or whip that exceeded the thickness of a grown Jekkoâs thumb. However, if filial permission was granted, then the husband could use the large beating stave.
Yes, Sister Behk had to learn her place. And if severe beatings were part and parcel of that education, then so be it. No longer would she sully the family name with her disobedience.
Vetikk wondered if the Baron would give him a go with the stave. Heâd always wanted to bring down that sanctimonious little bitch a peg or two.
He started to smile, but as he did, his driver gave out a strange cough and leapt off his seat and into the road. Vetikk glanced down at him to see the feathered flight of a clothyard arrow sticking out the side of his chest.
And then his world went to hell in a handbasket.
Arrows thudded into flesh as Vetikk huddled down in his carriage, whimpering in fear. A horde of humans came running from the forest, ululating war cries as they came.
The Jekko knight almost voided his bowels in terror when he saw them coming, carrying an assortment of weapons, lips pulled back in vicious snarls of anger. In the front, a gray skinned humanoid monster with a sword longer than a spear.
The two raptor riders pulled in front of the carriage, but the gray monster cleaved the one raptorâs head from his shoulders and then body-checked the second one, driving the massive beast to its knees. Then his sword swung again, dispatching the rider.
The raptor struggled to its feet, before a short human threw a dagger that struck it in the eye and dropped it like a sack of grain.
The Jekko men at arms yelled instructions as they formed the pike men into a skirmish line to protect their master. The bowmen drew their short swords at the same time, the enemy being too close to use bows.
