CHAPTER 28

‘Hearts and minds,’ said the Marine.

‘Don’t tell me,’ interjected Tad. ‘We’re all going back to Vietnam and this time we’re going to win.’

Nate sighed. ‘No. Just listen, general Thaddeus.’

The Little Big Man had the decency to look embarrassed. ‘Sorry, king.’

‘What I’m saying is, we need to recruit more people to the cause,’ continued the Forever Man. ‘We need to get seriously proactive about it. Firstly, more villages need to be visited in an attempt to convince them to move to Bastion. Secondly, we need to track down and raid any concentration camps, mines, enforced labor camps that we can in order to liberate the humans held there.

‘Finally, we need to put together an extensive undercover team to infiltrate Jekko towns and start cells of rebels. Guerilla warfare. Sabotage, disrupting supplies and recruiting. Anything to make life more difficult for the lizards and to bring attention to the struggle.’

‘Visiting villages and attacking camps is the easy part,’ said Tad. ‘Who do you have in mind for the undercover stuff? I’m no good, being of the less tall persuasion I tend to be rather noticeable. Kob stands out like … well, he’s an Orc.’

‘He speaks the truth,’ confirmed Kob unnecessarily.

‘And as for you,’ continued Tad. ‘We saw an example of your undercover work in Le Puy. What was it – a hundred deaths?’

‘Oh, come on,’ argued Nate. ‘It wasn’t even forty.’

‘Excuse me,’ jibed Tad. ‘The point is, this group here are particularly inept when it comes to keeping low and staying unnoticed.’

‘Piton,’ grunted Kob.

‘Bless you,’ quipped Tad.

‘The tall skinny man who traveled with Gaston,’ continued Kob.

‘I remember him,’ confirmed the Forever Man. ‘Quiet. Self-effacing. Wasn’t he a bit of a pacifist?’

‘Yes,’ answered Kob. ‘But he was a gladiator. Kills when he has to. Bright, thinks a lot, doesn’t stand out. He’s assisting Gaston at the moment.’

‘Send someone to fetch him,’ commanded Nate. ‘Let’s see what he has to say.’

‘I’ll fetch him, I’m quickest,’ said Kob as he stood up and left the cave.

‘Now, Tad, your Rangers. I need them to go wide. Find any concentration camps, forced labor camps, any place that we can liberate the prisoners.’

Tad nodded.

‘I thought of using Grim and doing it myself,’ said Nate. ‘But if he’s spotted, that will give them forewarning. So, rather rely on the Rangers.’

‘I’ll brief them straight away,’ acknowledged Tad. ‘We need to hit a few places and make sure some are far away so as not to give any clues to our position.’

Nate nodded his agreement as Tad left.

It was time to step things up a notch.
