The National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances
This list identifies substances that may—and those that may not—be used in organic crop and livestock production. It also lists substances that may be used in or on processed organic products. In general, synthetic substances are prohibited unless specifically allowed, and non-synthetic substances are allowed unless specifically prohibited. Regularly check the NOP’s website or the CFR 205.605 and 205.606 for updates and changes to this list.
Organic Certifying Agents
If you would like your farm, business, product formulations or manufacturing plant to be USDA Organic Certified, you must work with a certifying agent. As of October 2015, more than 80 certified USDA-accredited agents, located in both the U.S. and abroad , are authorized to certify operations to USDA organic standards. Most certifying agents are accredited by the USDA-NOP, but some are authorized through recognition agreements between the U.S. and foreign governments. Always confirm that your certifying agent is in good standing with USDA, and check this list regularly for updates. Certifying agencies are private organizations that will charge your business directly for their services. Organic certification fees are high but vary between organizations (some groups offer more support and assistance than others). Shop around to find the best one to fit your budget and needs.
