NINETEEN

THE VISIT

When Lenzi and I left Babette, he took on the task of finding Josh’s brother, which was proving more difficult than we thought.

Babette said she’d explain how exactly the brother was able to cause the chain reaction. That freed The Struag and would meet us at Keith’s. But since Lenzi was working on the brother information, we waited for him at the coffee shop by the police station.

“Did you get Sarah and Trina settled?” I asked.

“Yea, they’re at Trina’s place and they have it all religiously decked out. Where were you?”

“I went to Attorney Smith’s office.”

“So that’s where you were the whole time?” Babette questioned. “You went for it finally?”

I nodded. “I was hoping to get answers and maybe closure.”

“And?”

“I got a bit of both.”

“May I?” she asked with a slightly extended hand. “Unless of course it’s too personal.”

“No. I mean you can read it. It’s not too personal.” I reached into my purse and handed it to her.

Babette opened it and I knew she saw the date when her eyes widened. “Oh wow, she knew she was going to die.”

“Yep. Read.”

“Hey, nice staff,” I heard a younger male voice say.

“Thanks, Moses gave it to me.”

“Cool.” I looked up to make sure whoever said that was real and saw the talk young man walking to the counter.” I shrugged. “That was random.”

“Everything means something,” Babette said. “Just like this letter.”

My phone pinged with a text. It was from Lenzi. “Okay,” I said after reading it. “He said he’s going to the brother’s house and will meet us at Keith’s with him.”

“So, he found him?”

“He found him.”

Babette handed me the letter and picked up her coffee. “Let’s go.”

We pulled up to Keith’s at the same time that Lenzi pulled up in his squad car. My thinking of, ‘Oh that was fast’ was quickly squashed when he stepped out alone.

“What happened?” I asked. “I thought you had him.”

“I did too,” said Lenzi. “I did. But he wasn’t home. His mother was and said she’d give him my number.”

“You told her he wasn’t in trouble, right?” I asked. “Legally.”

Lenzi nodded. “I did. He has a different last name than Josh. Not sure why, they have the same father and mother.”

“Whose car?” Babette asked, pointing to the black Toyota parked in the driveway. “I haven’t seen that one here.”

I shrugged as I walked toward the door. “Maybe Millie or Saul have company.”

Keith answered almost immediately when I rang the doorbell. At first, he looked serious then he had this smirk on his face.

“Dude, wait, my dining room is like the start of a bad joke,” he said.

“Huh?” I questioned and followed him.

Keith proceeded to tell the opening to a joke. “A lawyer, Jewish Woman and a…” he held out his hand. “Priest, stepped into a bar.”

I saw what, or rather who, he pointed at and it wasn’t a joke.

Sitting at the dining room table with Millie and Saul was Father Basil.

The stuffy priest didn’t seem quite so stuffy when he saw me.

“Oh, there she is,” said Millie.
