This costume rendering dates from 1983 and perfectly illustrates Jerry Jackson’s mastery of color, scale, and silhouette for the stage. Jackson contracted Hedy Jo Star’s Las Vegas establishment to build many of the costumes designed for the 16th edition of the show. A 1983 press release for this edition of the Folies Bergere describes the vast quantities of materials employed: “Just in the can-can number alone, there are over 1,500 yards of fabric in the dresses. A total of 20,000 yards of ruffles were utilized to line the inside of the full-skirted [can-can] costumes. In the opening number, 50 thousand yards of sequins were sewn onto the showgirl gowns and dancer costumes.” Shop proprietor Star declared that “these are the best costumes I’ve ever seen and I think they’ll be the most glamourous in the whole city!” The costume featured in this sketch is seen realized and onstage in the black-and-white photograph below.
