By midafternoon, JoJo had flipped the blinds from their slight angular tilt, which allowed her to see outside if she neared them for a peek, to pulling them all the way to the top of the window frame. She was walking and drawing, standing and sketching, sitting with the pad on her knees and scribbling away. She was ripping out one page after the next as she filled them each with sketches of new clothing designs. The designs fell where they landed — on the floor, the counter, the table. Each were inspired by the simplicity of the countryside, the cooking, the décor; it all seemed to fill her at once and she needed to get it out of her and onto the page. She didn’t even think to check the internet, she was so focused.

As she turned the very last piece of the cardstock over its metal coils, she collapsed onto the couch. She couldn’t remember the last time she felt so fulfilled. She looked at the pages brimming with new ideas. Good ones. She realized with great satisfaction that she had, in fact, created. Jonny had helped her do it.

As she surveyed her day’s work, she heard her stomach growl. Realizing she hadn’t stopped to eat since breakfast, she glanced at her watch just as there was a knock at her door. Like clockwork, he was here with dinner. Making a quick stop by the mirror before answering the door, she examined her reflection. Her cheeks had color again. The glow of creativity had returned. She scooped her hair up into a high ponytail and turned, surprised to find herself skipping to the door.

“Heeeere’s Jonny!” she said, swinging the heavy wooden door open wide.

Jonny lit up with surprise. “Someone had a good day,” he said. “Do you mind?” he asked, gesturing to the table with his tray of food.

“Honestly, it’s perfect timing. I am starving!” she said, walking ahead of him to the kitchen to get some cups. “Will you be joining me tonight?” she asked with her back turned.

She’d said it without intending to. She’d needed space to process and hadn’t invited anyone to join her since her arrival. She realized that — maybe, just maybe — she was coming out of her funk.

Jonny didn’t answer right away. When JoJo turned to read his body language, she saw him looking around the room, taking in the sketches. When he looked at her again, his eyes were bright. “You drew,” he said, a statement rather than a question.

JoJo was skipping again, this time towards the table. She set another plate for Jonny and poured him a glass of red wine. “Thank you for bringing that sketchbook. I feel so inspired,” she said breathlessly. Her shoulders were relaxed, like the weight she’d been carrying upon her arrival had vanished.

“Those look really good. Are you planning to use them for your next collection?” Jonny asked, still casting glances around the room.

At this, JoJo sighed. She hadn’t thought beyond creating the sketches and the reality of how the world currently viewed her came in like a bomb.
