Chapter Seventeen

“Wish we could stay for another class, even just another night.”

“I know the feeling.” Bree smiled at her friend. “I would love to stay longer at this place, so peaceful.” The two exchanged smiles, sitting on lawn chairs in the yard right off their room. One heavy red hen scratched in the grass near the wall, a barred gray one with a flop-over red comb chasing bugs. Bougainvillea sweetening the breeze, the bright magenta splashing down a wall. She glanced at her watch. Denise said they’d leave in fifteen minutes but she was off shooting pictures somewhere and Rachel had yet to show her face. No matter, this way she had written postcards to send to Jessica and James, Paula and Pierre. She huffed a sigh. Three days now and she’d not heard from Pierre, not even after she left a phone message for him. Not that she should have expected to hear from him, but…

Bree and Lizzie had finished off the delicious jam cake bread their hostess had left in their rooms, along with the cheese and outstanding coffee. The recipe for the cake bread was safe in Bree’s collection folder, along with the recipes and instructions from the day before. Bree ran her finger over the plate to collect a few more delectable crumbs. She wished she’d managed to connect with Jessica, after that missed call. The time difference made it hard; though Bree had tried twice, once again first thing this morning, she only got Jessica’s voicemail. Surely if something were really wrong, she’d have heard from someone else, wouldn’t she? Paula or James? So much for carefree travel and leaving her worries at home.

“Yesterday was fun, wasn’t it?” Lizzie sipped the last of her coffee.

The afternoon before the four of them had driven into a nearby town to be greeted by three- and four-story-tall brick and stone buildings, as if they were driving into a fortress. Navigating the narrow streets caused more than one sucked-in breath when they met a car coming toward them. No wonder the Italians drove such small cars. Their SUV took up more than its share of the street, feeling like it was almost scraping the walls.

“I hope I never forget that window way up on that wall with a window box of bright-red geraniums.” Bree blew out a breath. “I wanted a tour of the apartment behind that window. Those blank walls seemed more like prison walls than for homes and businesses.”

“The pizza was good too.” Lizzie chuckled. “I love hearing all the conversations in Italian.”

“I wanted to know what they were saying.” This speaking bare-minimum Italian was not enough for this nosy author. Body language here was fun to watch, though. “If I ever write an Italian character, I will know how dramatic they can be.” She mimicked those they watched, waving her arms while she talked. Such a whole new world was opening up to her here. Hopefully it would open up her writing too, eventually.

Lizzie chuckled. “Surely there is a story for me in there somewhere.
