Ppp looked at me and I looked at Ppp. We didn’t say anything. For a long time there was nothing but the sounds of the tripod mechanism, walking us across the Earth.

Ppp turned toward the quartz and so did I.

The dark-skinned and golden-eyed show up in your dreams sometimes. You’re supposed to file a report when they do. No one ever does.

“They’re in the scrolls,” Ppp said without looking at me. “The ones with the golden eyes. At least they used to be. They were gone the last time I looked for them. In the scrolls.”

“They revise the scrolls, you know that,” I reminded him.

“I wonder about that, too,” he said and reached in front of him and made a cross on the inside of the quartz with the tip of his dominant tentacle. “If the scrolls are ancient documents, the underpinning of Martian society, how can they go back in and change them? And who decides what gets changed?”

“I don’t know,” I said, trying to make it sound like “I don’t care.”

“But they used to be in there. The ones with the golden eyes.”

“So what if they were? Now they’re gone because nobody believes in them anymore. That’s why they took them out.”

“If they never existed, how come they show up in our dreams?”

I didn’t want to answer him. Mostly because I didn’t like him saying “our dreams.” As if he knew I dreamed of them, too. As if dreaming about the dark-skinned ones with golden eyes was something everybody did at some point. Besides, it’s nobody’s business what I dream about.
