Chapter 4
Voodoo! Who do? You do
The Seventh Ward was old and in disrepair. Sadly, Nora knew the decrepit state of this section of New Orleans had occurred long before the pandemic. Staring down at the small map with her flashlight, Nora prayed she found her aunt's home quickly. She didn't have the mental fortitude to find her way if she got lost, not after watching Lucy get ripped apart. Just thinking about it made bile rise in her throat. Following the directions, Nora was grateful when she spied her aunt's house not ten minutes later.
The small Creole cottage was divided into a duplex, with a tall white pitched roof and two brightly painted blue doors streaked with grime and mud. Wiping the tears off her face, Nora attempted to swallow down her grief over Lucy as she knocked on number 609. No one answered. Knocking again, partly out of impatience and partly out of worry for what might be stalking her, Nora took a deep breath. It was possible her aunt hadn't survived. After all, Ollie was her dad's older sister and had to be in her seventies by now. If The Red Death hadn't taken her out, there was a good chance a zombie had. No one came to the door, but Nora heard a distinct shuffling sound on the other side. Someone or something was in there.
Squaring her shoulders, Nora called out, "Ollie Marcelin? If you're in there, please open the door. I'm your niece, Nora. I know we've never met, but I came to find you, so if you're in there, please let me in. I'm not sick, and it's not safe out here."
Minutes ticked by, and still no answer. Nora was about to give up when she heard the lock click on the door. It swung open with a loud groan, and on the other side of the dimly lit interior stood a petite woman with warm caramel-colored skin and long grey hair braided over one shoulder. Ollie's smile was warm as she took her in.
"You don't look a thing like my Evens, Mon Cher. Must have gotten all the good genes from your mama. Your daddy wasn't much of a looker. Smart as a whip, though."
Nora wasn't sure what she expected of her aunt Ollie, but this tiny, adorable, sarcastic woman was the farthest thing from it.
Ollie motioned for Nora to come inside. "It's about time you came to see me. Too bad it took the end of civilization to get your skinny butt to my doorstep."
Nora smiled as she followed Ollie inside. The interior of the cottage was warm and bright, lit by the glow of dozens of tapered candles.
Ollie took up residence in the small kitchen and motioned for Nora to sit at the dining table. "So, what brings you here now, Nora?"
Wringing her hands back and forth, Nora suddenly felt nervous. "To be honest, I've wanted to meet you since I found your information in my mother's things. Now, with the world the way it is, I figured it was now or never.
