Chapter 17. There Ain’t No Such Thing as Free Lunch

“PUT MORE fire under your enemies’ feet, Liquidator!” I repeated mechanically the last words of the message.

Jo perked up. “Liquidator? Is that what you are? What does that mean?”

I popped the red balloon and spent some time studying the description of the class that the observers had assigned me.

Predictably, no one had bothered with a detailed description. It was as if the text was being generated in a trial subject’s brain, using their mentality and worldview.

These are the results of the Observers’ vote:

— 50,8% have voted for the Liquidator class

— 49,2% have voted for the Lord of Monsters class

The test subject has been assigned the Liquidator class

Test subject’s name: Phil, human, Level 10

The decision is final and cannot be reversed.

Liquidator:

Class level: 1

The trial subject receives a new class level automatically with every five levels gained.

Liquidators are melee fighters. They mainly deal damage with daggers, causing bleeding effects to their targets. Although their various skills allow them to adapt to any combat situation, their best bet is to deal strong explosive damage to a single target. They stun and paralyze their enemy.

First-level talents:

Treacherous Shadow. Allows a liquidator to vanish, then immediately reappear behind their opponent’s back. Active range: 150 feet.

Stun. Allows a liquidator to paralyze their target for the duration of 5 seconds.

Unable to resist the temptation of trying both talents in action, I cast a look at the unsuspecting Ola who was lovingly studying his new toy — Carter’s spear.

I gave a mental chuckle. “Ola?”

He raised his head. I activated Treacherous Shadow.

I should have shut my eyes because I’d very nearly lost all coordination when, instead of the view of our shelter and my peacefully conversing friends, I was suddenly facing the Cameroonian’s back.

I activated Stun.

The spear dropped to the ground, and his head, to his chest. He remained on his feet, staggering slightly. Instead of cartoon stars, a timer appeared over his head, counting down the seconds.

Once he came back to his senses, he spouted African invective, asking all evil spirits and Jesus himself be the witness of his fury.

Jovanna laughed, pouring oil on troubled waters. The cheerful Ola joined in, unable to help himself.

“Phil? What was that?” he asked, grinning.

‘Sorry, man. I just couldn’t help myself. I had to see how these class talents work. My class is Liquidator, a melee fighter. So far, they've given me two talents. The first one basically teleports me behind the target's back. The second one complements it perfectly: it's a five-second stun. By the way, what did you feel?”

“What did I feel? I didn’t feel anything. It was as if my arms and legs had gone to sleep. My whole body had gone to sleep. I didn’t feel a damn thing! I couldn’t even bat an eyelid. Eh... wait a sec. I hope neither of you has
