Hot Dogs

Paul was standing upright. He felt like he should be getting a lot of credit for that, but so far nobody had offered any. His limbs were shaking and his stomach felt like it had been removed from his body, kicked around by a herd of irate bison and then put back into him. But, despite all this, he was standing upright. The inside of his wrestling mask was already clammy with cold sweat. Beside him, Brigit looked as bad as he felt. Both of them vibrating with that kind of jittery tension you only get when standing somewhere that is nowhere near close enough to a toilet.

They were on the stage inside the marquee. Behind them a long curtain stretched across, hiding whatever new fiendish torture Dorothy had designed as the third challenge. He desperately hoped it was something that involved sitting down quietly. Maybe a competition to see who could curl into a ball and die? He felt confident of his chances in that one.

Beside them, the other three teams looked positively chipper. Even Tristan looked like a man who knew where he was. Clearly, Manny had managed to gain control of the big bag of drugs and found a combo of substances that made Tristan appear to be a functional human being to the untrained eye. Gregory looked down from the far end of the line and gave Paul a wink and a smile. Prick. He’d go to his grave believing that the chocolates had come from him. The way he felt, that might not be long.

As the music ended, Spanner delivered his intro down the camera. “Hello and welcome to day two of The Money Games. We’re delighted to hear we’ve been trending on Twitter. Why not comment on the action with the hashtag Money Games? After yesterday the pink team are in a commanding lead but there’s still plenty of points to play for. Before our next challenge though, let’s see how our teams are doing.”

Spanner turned and headed over to them. “The pink team, Queen Bee and Sidekick Boy – how are our early leaders feeling? Confident?”

He shoved the mic at Brigit’s face. She took a gulp of air. “Yeah.”

Spanner held the mic in front of her a few seconds longer, his wide smile losing some wattage when he realised that was all he was getting. He moved it across to Paul. “So, Sidekick Boy, your milk knowledge got social media buzzing yesterday. Are you hoping for more dairy based questions today?”

Paul tried not to think of anything dairy. “No.”

Spanner looked between the two of them. “Super. Great banter guys.”

Paul could sense Brigit sagging with relief as he moved along to the green team.

“Tristan and Manny, how is our creative genius today?”

“Totally,” said Tristan, not answering anything he’d been asked. “This is such an intense experience. It’s really kick-starting my creative juices. I wrote a song last night about it.”

“Ah well,” said Spanner. “It’s nice to have a hobby.”

Manny gave a laugh that wasn’t one.
