Chapter 25

Alexis Night Runner

The English-style manor nestled in a grove of cottonwoods. A wall of floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the Salt River that flowed with lazy swirls not too far from the carved front door. Rugged mountains rose in sharp peaks behind the sprawling house. Green grass formed a skirt around the building.

An elaborate rose garden with brick walkways and a large fountain in the middle with an arbor covered in pink flowering clematis vines, sprawled on the east side of the house. Farther back from the manor, two-story log cabins peeked from between the thick greenery of trees. I counted twelve cabins, but there could have easily been twice that number tucked out of sight.

As soon as we turned onto the narrow dirt road leading to the main compound, my senses tingled. Though I saw no one, as we drew closer to the main house, I felt as if my skin might crawl off my body. I’d never had such a strong reaction to vampires before; I wondered how much was caused by the panther inside me.

“I can feel hidden vampires,” I murmured as I drove toward the mansion. “Ri, can you smell anything?”

Silently, she shook her head.

“Keep your eyes and ears open and your weapons handy,” I warned as I pulled to a stop.

Using her cell phone, Ri warned the vehicle behind us to remain back far enough to allow a quick three-point turn in case we needed to escape. Parked some distance away from the mansion, we piled out and formed two groups.

“Ariel, stay with Nikki’s unit. Ri, you and Aife follow me.” Striding up to the entry door, I lifted my hand to the doorbell. At the last second, I dropped my palm to the door knob and gently twisted, letting the vibrations of the metal warn me of any obstructions tied to it. It wasn’t until the door opened a fraction that I saw it.

“Bomb!” I yelled as I flung myself against Aife. We flew off the shallow, rail-less porch as a concussive wave slammed into me, flinging me yards farther from the house. A wave of sound pounded against my ears. For a moment as I picked myself up from the dirt, I saw Ri’s mouth moving, but no sound reached me. Faidh pushed to the front of my mind, nostrils flared as she tried to compensate for the loss of hearing.

Aife scrambled up and drew her gun in one hand and her short sword in the other. Close-by Ri brushed dirt from her jeans, shook her head as if to clear it and turned to me with a grim set to her mouth. Vampires raced from the trees, swords glinting beneath the early evening sun. Panthers bounded out of the shadows in the woods, teeth gleaming, but eerily silent.

Hands steadied, I tattooed a pattern of bullet holes through the closest vampire’s heart. From the corner of my eye, I caught sight of a tawny form as it leapt for me. Too close, way too close for me to fend the cat off.
