Chapter 23

Winter Cove Option

The Cairo

Cassidy had Nakamura hold back the casualty lists until after the Rangers had a chance to look it over. They all knew that Molly’s husband had been in Alpha Company and that his name was not on the lists but there were a few names that some of them were familiar with. The most recent casualty and missing lists were put up on the display during the evening meal after the most recent update was played for everyone.

At the evening staff meeting Veronika Tchachenko as usual was the first to speak. “Commander Cassidy,” she said, “in dat broatcast they didn’t list us wid de other missing pipple again. Are they saying that they think now that we are all ted?”

“Cheapdate, you can be a Ted if you want, but I’m an Ian,” joked Sergeant Ferguson. Veronika glared at him and there were several moans about the table, then he said, “Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.”

“How ‘bout I poison your fute,” said the scowling company supply officer. “Den I say I couldn’t help myselve,” she said with a grin to laughter from around the table.

“Okay, that’s enough you two,” said Rick with a tired sigh. “There’ll be no poisoning today.”

“Okay, nod today,” agreed Veronika, giving Ferguson a dirty look. “Like I said, they think we are dead, don’t they?”

“No, I don’t believe so, not at all,” Cassidy told her more seriously. “The names of missing personnel you saw today were just new additions to the list. The other list showed people who they’d now accounted for, a few dead but most alive.”

“Hoo, vell that’s a big relieve, Commander Rick, bud I think soon dey’ll soon finish evacuating New St Louis. I think before we had a liddle hope dat dey would come for us, you know?” the Russian said. “Now we don’t.”

Rick nodded in agreement, “You’re probably right about New St Louis running out of time. I think they’ll go after Winter Haven next which reduces even more the slim possibility that anyone might come and look for us anytime soon. That said, now we can all move forward without any reservations. Anybody who may have been holding back, hoping that this would all go away should close that door and start giving a hundred and ten percent effort from now on.”

“Is this something you’re going to talk to the girls about or should we?” Turner asked.

“Yes, Poledancer. That’s my job to do,” Rick replied. “I’ll address it tomorrow after breakfast and before they start their day’s activities. But we have other things to talk about now because of that broadcast.”

“Oh, vat’s dat den?” Tchachenko asked.

Rick pursed his lips in thought then with a look at Molly he said, “Once New St Louis falls several things are more likely. First, there is even less reason to think they’ll be able to find us. There’s nothing new there. A greater worry is that we’ll be seeing more alien ships flying overhead, either heading north or actively looking for us.
