CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Oscar turned to David Granhill. "Let's go about trying to open that other exit you and John found. Take George, Pete and Gil with you and any of the women that want to go along. We'll be closing down this entrance in a couple of hours. So, if we can make another opening, there's no time to lose."

Dave nodded. "We'll get picks and shovels. I'll see if the wives want to go along."

"Good. Let me know as soon as you break through."

Aaron shook his head as Dave left. "I don't know, Oscar. Our force is depleted by one third. Eight men gone, leaves us with sixteen, six of them outsiders"

Oscar shrugged. "We have to prepare for all eventualities. That bunch out there leaves us no choice. As for those outsiders, I like Steffan and Watkins, throw in Gould too. I believe we can trust those three now that they recognize the position we're in. Even Jensen seems contrite for what he did. Mitch and Stewart are the question marks."

Aaron shrugged, turned to the others. "Let's get moving! Take all the supplies and equipment you can carry. Then come back for more. I'll give you time to take cover before I blast. And when I do, I want you to take cover underneath the balcony so any pressure from the explosion will go over your heads."

Aaron strung out the wire as far as it could go, but it wouldn't reach the balcony area.

"There's an alcove we used for storage," he said. "I'll shoot it from there."

"Are you sure there's enough cover?" Oscar looked at him. "You're not the smallest guy in the group."

"As long as my butt don't stick out, I won't worry."

"You're so proud of your tush," Oscar laughed. "Just don't let Sylvia hear about it. She won't let your sorry ass forget it."

Aaron laughed too. "Is that what it takes to be noticed? Go ahead, get this stuff out of here so I can blow the entrance."
