Chapter 34

Emma

Emma squinted at him like he was a mirage. Kai had reached her within a few seconds after she fell. He scooped her up and laid her head on his lap.

“What happened?” he asked.

“Kai? What are you doing here?”

“I saw you trying to run again and followed you.”

Emma shook her head.

“Guess it’s a good thing. A rattlesnake bit me.” She held up her dress and showed him the fang marks on her leg.

He looked frightened. “Terrible poison. Let me show you what I would do.”

“I need your bone knife. I will cut the wound, and you suck out the poison.”

He shook his head slowly. “I don’t understand.”

“The venom is entering my bloodstream, and I want you to take it in your mouth and spit it out.”

She grabbed her bag of water and took a deep swallow. Then she spat it out on the ground. Emma looked into Kai’s eyes and saw that he understood.

“I’m going to lie still and hope the poison doesn’t travel to my heart. Here’s what’s going to happen. The symptoms of shock are clammy skin and confusion, and I may pass out. Do you understand, Kai? I may go into a deep sleep, but leave me here on the ground. Don’t move me. Do you have any herbs with you?”

He reached into his knapsack and brought out the skinned fish with moss and leaves covering it.

Emma’s face grew numb.

“Here we go, Kai. I cut, and you suck my blood and spit it out.”

Emma raised the bone. It was as sharp as a surgical instrument. She sliced her leg between the fang marks and screamed as Kai leaned over and took a big gulp. He turned to the side and spat, and Emma could see red stains on the sand. Then he spit a second time.

“Not the latest method, but we certainly can’t get me to a doctor in time. Wrap that fish around my cut, place the moss and leaves over the wound, and sit with me.”

Emma looked down at her soiled dress and noticed fang marks on the hide. A sense of relief swept through her. When snakes bite through clothing, an entire dose of venom rarely reaches the bloodstream.

She lay back, and Kai reached for her hand. Emma felt lightheaded and nauseous. Her vision blurred as she saw Kai lean over her. A drop of her blood still stained his lip. Then, all went dark.
