At the end of the ward round Nick Mountjoy said, âJust a minute, Nurse Cooper. I wanted to thank you.â
âWhatever for?â
âHaving that chat with Dougie Douglas.â
âIt didnât go very well, Iâm afraid.â She shook her head in confusion. âI just seem to irritate him.â
Nick Mountjoy pushed his bottom lip out in amused disbelief. âThatâs as maybe, but it did the trick. Heâs up and about.â
âThatâs excellent news.â
âIt is and it isnât. Iâve tried to get him to socialise with the other patients, but he wonât. This good weather doesnât help. He disappears into the parkland for most of the day.â
âPerhaps heâs down at the pub.â
Mountjoy shook his head. âI doubt it. No, heâs hiding. Iâve stopped him taking cover in a sideward and instead heâs out there somewhereâ¦â Nick Mountjoy waved a hand towards the window, âhunkered down where no one can see him and reappearing on the ward at dusk. Heâs turning into a first class Count Dracula.â
Clara laughed. âThatâs a bit unkind.â
Nick Mountjoy shrugged. âItâs a damned sight better than Quasimodo, which he prefers to call himself. But look, I want to strike while the ironâs hot. I want you to ask him out.â
âMe?â
âYes. You. He likes you. I can tell.â
âHe canât stand me.â
âEither way, somehow youâve got under his skin.â
âWhat on earth do you want me to do with him?â
Nick threw his head back and bellowed with laughter. âAnything you like, but I rather thought a drink in the pub or a meal out would be a good idea.â
âWhat about the cinema?â
âNo â although heâd probably prefer that. He could hide away in the darkness. But the whole point is that heâs got to face the public.â
âThat seems terribly cruel if he canât even stand a general ward.â Clara thought of his shaved head, his swollen and red grafted eyes and clawed hands.
âAnd thatâs precisely why I insisted he came out of that side ward. And precisely why your intervention is essential. Please. Do it for me.â
