The first thing Alan was aware of was that he felt warm, like being wrapped up in a blanket next to a roaring fireplace. The warmth spread through his extremities and soothed him to the core. He didn’t know what was causing the sensation, but he knew that he never wanted it to stop. He didn’t know where he was, but it didn’t matter. It was peaceful, comfortable, and welcoming. He wanted to stay there forever.

Alan opened his eyes but saw nothing. His eyes were sore and felt like they had been pressed up against something rough for far too long, like when he used to fall asleep in class in grade school. He slowly lifted his head and discovered that was almost exactly what had happened. His head was resting on his forearm, propped up on a metal table in some kind of small room.

As his eyes began to focus, the warm feeling subsided somewhat to make room for his other perceptions. He was sitting in a metal chair and leaning over an identically metal table. On the other side of that table, a familiar face stared back at him.

“There he is!” The person said, smiling.

Alan wiped his eyes. The voice was strangely soothing. Or rather, he was already in a relaxed state, and the voice did nothing to hinder that. He glanced around the room and allowed the warmth to wash over him. Every sensory input gave him some kind of indescribable pleasure. He wanted more of it. He wanted to listen to music, or eat something sweet, or get a massage, or smell freshly cut grass. In his current state, he knew the joy he would experience would be magnified by a hundred times, and he craved it.

“Hello, have we met?” Alan spoke, grinning.

The familiar person at the end of the table laughed.

“Oh, we’ve met a couple of times. I don’t think we’ve ever been properly introduced, though. My name’s Thomas, but you can call me Tom.”

“Hello Tom, I’m Alan. You can call me Alan.” Alan giggled at his own joke. He was such a funny guy. Jokes made Alan happy. He liked to be happy, like he was at that very moment.

“Of course. I know all about you, Alan. I’m sure you’d like to know what’s happening to you right now - why you feel the way you do-”

“I feel amazing!” Alan cut him off. Every syllable Tom spoke sent a different wave of euphoria through his body, almost like each one had its own unique flavor. He could practically taste it, but not with his tongue, like he would taste ice cream right then if he had some, but rather with his nerves, or his muscles. He wanted the man to keep talking so he could taste more and more flavors.

“I can only imagine. The stuff we gave you, it’s somewhat of a miracle drug. A spook’s wet dream, if you will. A small dose will make you feel the way you do now. In that state, people tend to be.
