Chapter 22 – Local Celeb

*** Mac ***

Fuck, yes. I’m really enjoying life in Pleb Town, Clapham, I mean. Just chilling and drinking beer with Saskia, Keith and his Bros from SW4. I just got the highest-ever Tetris score for London. Apparently, a few fanatics in Singapore made a religion out of it and have much higher scores, but I’m a local celebrity now. I say beer, but this has never seen a hops plant in its life. I don’t tell the Bros that, though, there’s no point in ruling the evening.

“Mac Bro, you got the reaction speed of a god.”

Keith punches me on the arm—a Plebeian sign of affection. I’ve got to stop thinking like that. “Ah, it’s just a game.” I didn’t want to let my early success go to my head, but I felt proud seeing my photo all over the screens. Even if it’s just for a pointless activity.

“Nah, Mac, you slotting them in fine. Tell you what, though, Bro, you want to come down the track sometime? Playing games is all good, but nothing gets the heart pumping like a perfect knee down on the bike track.”

His friends nod in agreement.

“Track?” I ask. What’s Keith tracking? I’m still trying to figure out what he’s talking about.

“Yeah, the bike track. That’s where the real men go. I used to be pretty good myself until I lost my elbow.” He shows me his elbow.

I stare in horror at the job they’ve done to repair it. Metal plates and bolts look like something from 2018. I’m surprised he can actually move it.

“Shit Bro. I might be able to find someone who can help you with that. I know a little about how to fix a few things myself.” I’m trying to figure out how I can tell him exactly. In the Medic lab in Cambridge, I could get that fixed in ten minutes, not just as good as new, but better than new. I’ll have to think of some way to get the tools over here without making it too obvious. A sudden sensation of revulsion shoots through my stomach. We’ve developed the tools to help people, but we keep them private. Selfish, that’s what we are. Techs are just a branch of the Establishment; they’re no less voracious. In fact, they’re more narcissistic. They have the technology to help everyone and just keep it to entertain themselves and manipulate people.

“Really? They told me I was lucky to be able to move it. He said that no one could do a better job than that.”

No one? Maybe not in 2018; they couldn’t. I’ll have to get the right tools here and fix him up. It’ll be easy with the right tools. Everything’s easy with the right tools.

Saskia looks up, flicking her hair over her ear. “Mac used to work in the North Sea on those windmill things, so he must have learnt a few first aid skills there.”

I’d forgotten I told her that. I need to keep my story straight.
