He straightened his hat. “I had a fight with a shrub. I lost.” He took a deep breath. “So, yes. The good news is that P.U.G. dug up the courtyard stones like a bot-boss and found the first piece of the Scarlet Claw.”

“Excellent.” Ophelia’s eyes twinkled. “What is it?”

Oscar’s head drooped. “Well, it’s a base of some kind. Looks to be a power source. But…” He blinked quickly. “There is some very, very bad news. I instructed P.U.G. to dig up the device and clue and then to only give them to me. And now…” He gulped. “Well, now the device and the clue are gone! I definitely gave P.U.G. accurate instructions. I’m not sure what happened. Maybe it short-circuited?”

“HISS!” Anger surged through Ophelia and her fur stood on end. “One of those doggone miserable mutts must have nabbed it!” she exclaimed. She frowned at P.U.G., which was oblivious to her fury, but then took a deep breath. She knew a tantrum directed at a well-meaning fish or a pile of bolts would do nothing but eat up precious time. “We have no time to fret, fish. I have a policy against being late or losing. These dogs may be book-smart, but they lack our street savvy. There is always hope. We’ll find a way to get this piece back and get the next piece—fast.”
