Gavin
I canât stop thinking about last night.
I had so much fun, and it wasnât all because I got to be close to Willow. Keegan, Bram, Pressley, and even Trace were as welcoming as they were entertaining, treating me like an established member of their friend group and not some interloper trying to infiltrate their ranks.
I honestly felt like I belonged, and when was the last time I felt that way with anyone?
Maybe with Julia. Weâve been practically best friends for more than a decade, so I can be myself around her. No masks. No acting.
Thatâs how I felt last night.
As if Iâve conjured her, my phone starts to ring, and Juliaâs name flashes across the screen. I immediately tense up, but not because I donât want to talk to her. No, itâs because of what this call probably means.
She begged me to stick close to her when she was here for the convention because sheâs been having some issues with the girl sheâs dating. Her girlfriend wants to go public, tired of being Juliaâs âdirty little secret.â Iâve always encouraged her to be her authentic self, but you canât force someone whoâs not ready to just give up the pretense and live their truth. If she refused her girlfriendâs request too many times, they may have split over it.
And every time Julia has a breakup, she asks me to be seen with her in public. Iâm her security wall in case the ex decides to go public with the truth. Iâve always been that for her, ever since the first time I agreed and ended up losing Willow.
Fuck, I hope that isnât what this is. Not when things are finally mending between Willow and me.
âHey, you,â I say as a greeting when I answer, hoping thereâs no anxiety in my tone.
âHey, Gav. How are you?â
âIâm good. Really good, actually. This time in Evening Shade has been veryâ¦healing.â
âYouâve patched things up with her?â she asks, not missing a beat.
âNot quite,â I say, âbut weâre getting there. I told her what really happened between us, that the whole thing was a publicity stunt, and sheâs agreed to try to be friends again. But donât worry, Jules, I didnât tell her anything you wouldnât want her to know.â
âI know that, Gav. I trust you. Actually, thatâs why Iâm calling.â
Fuck. I knew it.
âWhatâs happened?â I ask. âDid you and Stella break up?â
âQuite the opposite,â she answers quickly, a shaky laugh in her voice. âIâve realized I really am in love with her, and I donât want to hide, anymore.â
âWait, really?â I ask on a rushed exhale. âJules, thatâs great.â
âIâve been so stupid, trying to hide who I am for all these years. Iâm not a kid anymore, and I have nothing to be afraid of. Iâm taking an interview with Entertainment Today tonight, and Stella is coming with me. Weâre going to announce our engagement.â
âEngagement? Jules. Congratulations. Really. You deserve all the happiness in the world.â
âThanks, Gavin. I really appreciate your support, but Iâm concerned how all this is going to affect you.
