Chapter 24

Vic rolled around on the floor, covering his throat, blood gushing from his mouth. Sarah lay motionless at the table. Rick aimed his gun at me, but I stood my ground, shielding Amber behind me.

Mike screamed and tackled Rick from the side.

"Run!" Amber screamed at me.

She grabbed me by the shirt and pulled at me until I ran with her outside into the falling snow. I could still hear Rick and his brother wrestling on the ground, yelling at each other. The shouts from inside the cabin grew louder.

As we ran into the cold winter night, I realized that neither of us were prepared for the freezing temperatures, as we’d left without boots or jackets.

"There's no time to stop!" Amber yelled as she held my hand, and we ran deeper into the forest. I reluctantly followed her, checking back every so often at the cabin.

Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, and I froze, my thoughts turning to Mike, my husband, whom I had abandoned to his fate. I stopped. Amber tugged on my arm, but I shrugged her away.

"Mike!” I yelled.

“Stop!” Amber shouted. “He’s going to find us.”

I turned to Amber. “I left him. I left him to be killed. All because I didn't trust him."

Amber tugged on my hand again and said, "We have to go if we want to survive this. Now, let's move.”

As we ran, two more shots came from inside the cabin. I turned and screamed my husband's name again. "Mike!"

Amber pulled me towards some thick bushes. "Don’t make me leave you, Dawn. We have to go – now! Please!”

After a few moments, I could hear my name being shouted. "Dawn! Dawn! Stop!” It wasn't Mike, but Rick. "You don't understand!”

I looked at Amber. “Okay, let's move,” I agreed. We hurried into the forest as fast as we could manage.

It was a daunting task. The snow was coming down heavily, making it difficult to see where we were going. The cold was biting at our skin, numbing our fingers and toes. I could feel the chill creeping into my bones. My feet were already numb, and each step was a struggle as I fought to keep them from freezing. Amber was struggling as well, her teeth chattering as she ran beside me. We weren’t going to make it much further.

We trudged on, each step becoming harder and harder. I could feel the fatigue setting in, and my mind was beginning to wander. I thought about Mike. I thought of the three shots from the cabin. I thought of Sarah and Victor, dead, now joined by my husband.

Then I thought about Junior.

The thought of my son snapped me out of my daze. I pulled back on Amber's hand, forcing her to stop. "We need to come up with a plan. Rick knows these woods better than us. He will find us."

"When I was running before he tracked my footsteps."

I peered up at the heavy snow coming down. "Thankfully, Mother Nature might help us with that, and cover up our tracks.
