Chapter 7: Truth Or Dare

Ransom

“That was way too much fun,” Serena exclaimed on their walk back to the hotel.

Not caring that they were both blasting sweat bombs, he looped an arm around her slender waist and hugged her as they passed through the revolving glass doors of the front entrance. “You were awesome out there. I was so proud of your win that I almost started blubbering like a baby.”

“Speaking of babies,” she rolled her eyes, “winning the race felt a little too much like stealing candy from one for my tastes.”

“Hey!” He scowled down at her. “You were the strongest runner out there. It was a fair and justifiable win.”

Her lush pink lips turned down at the corners. “Maybe, but the race meant a lot more to Macy than me. Part of me feels really bad for her right now.”

Only because you’re one of the sweetest, kindest people who has ever walked the face of this miserable earth! “Trust me, her reasons were far from noble.”

“Were they, Ransom?” She raised troubled eyes to his. “Because from my perspective, if she came to this reunion with plans to try to win you back, I can’t exactly criticize her taste in men.”

“Thank you,” he said cautiously, wondering what point she was leading up to.

“You’re welcome. All I’m saying is I’m having a hard time villainizing her over the fact she might have finally woken up and realized what an amazing gift she overlooked in you years ago.”

“It’s too late, Serena.” He slapped the up button of the elevator controls, hardly believing they were having this conversation. “That train long since left the station. It’s over between us.”

“Of course it’s over, you nut.” She waited until the elevator doors rolled shut behind them before looping her arms around his neck. “We’re married, remember?” She stood on tiptoe to brush her mouth against his. “At least for one more day.”

He devoured her lips, still euphoric about the race despite the unexpected turn of their current conversation. “Just for the record, I have no plans of giving you up, doll.” He punctuated his vow with another very thorough kiss. “Ever!”

“Good, because I’m in no hurry to let you go, either.”

The elevator stopped on the top floor, but he remained standing there with her locked in his embrace for several moments longer.

“You might have to let me go for at least a few minutes, so we can shower,” she teased at last.

Right. He reluctantly dropped his arms to dig in his pocket for the elevator key.

“I’ve been having some brainstorms about the Truth Or Dare game that I’ll share with you after we clean up.” They stepped inside, and she kicked off her sneakers.

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah, and they’re super good ideas, so don’t keep me waiting.” With that, she danced down the hallway.

He showered and started to change into jeans and a t-shirt. Recalling that Serena had brought none with her, however, he opted for a white button-up shirt and a pair of beige slacks, instead. He toned it down by rolling the sleeves and stepping into a pair of leather loafers.
