Location: Cerberus, High Orbit above Sh’in

Tinek strode down the long hall the Cerberus’s main quarters deck. The massive scale of the ship never ceased to amaze him. The largest spacecraft his people had created was a small station above Lintalla, and it had been destroyed during the first hours of the Tarin’Tal invasion. Nilwa, one of Tinek’s few remaining guards, and two large human soldiers walked behind him as he made his way out of the hallway and into the transportation hub. He had a meeting with a council of civilians and military officers from the human fleet. Military ranks he somewhat understood, but the civilians were “elected,” a concept he had yet to fully understand. He understood how it worked; it was how the humans expected the winner, of what he saw as a popularity contest, to act in the best interests of the people that he didn’t get. Illani society had been both feudal and individualistic. They had titles, which had translated fairly fluidly into medieval titles of dukes and counts, while holding many individual rights as sacred.

Any feudal lord from the military or ruling class who attempted to violate those rights would have his lands confiscated, his hereditary title for him and his family revoked, and be publicly executed by the one he offended or their closest kin. They took the issue very seriously. While Tinek understood that these people came from a different history and had different traditions, their views on total democracy were disturbingly similar to the Tarin’Tal’s defiled guiding Will.

Five minutes later, the pod came to a stop, and the door slid open to another hub. After a short walk, Tinek and his guards found themselves at an entrance to a large conference room. Inhaling to center himself, Tinek stepped forward. The door slid open, and he walked forward to meet the human leaders in the most important meeting he would ever attend.

There were twenty people in the room; seven wore uniforms, thirteen did not. Tinek recognized only a few people—Admiral Hancock, Captain Harrington, who had been personally tutoring him in both human customs and language, and the civilian representatives who had been present at the ambassador meal he had eaten after he had boarded the Cerberus. Very few of the people in the room looked friendly to the exiled regent.

Tinek had spent the past several days working on a human-style proposal, often with Admiral Hancock and A’ssia. The admiral had explained many of the important points to cover in convincing the “congress” to accept his plan. After all, it was an audacious idea, even to the mind of a born and raised leader like Tinek. The three of them planned to create a unified society of both Illani and human foundations, taking the shattered pieces of both races and reforging them under one cohesive government. He had worked long and hard to find a compromise that would work for both the humans and his own people.

Tinek found himself in the unique position of deciding the fate of his entire race while needing to preserve their core beliefs.
