CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Ellis placed the ice pack on the bed when he heard the knock on the door. Heâd taken some pain pills, but the verdict was in. He wouldnât be capable of anything more than cuddling with Gerry tonight.
He was starting to sense a pattern of destruction hereâstarting with slamming into Gerry on their first day of filming and now the hammock incident. But even if it meant risking further harm, Ellis would still do anything to spend time with her.
He eagerly threw the door open. âHow did filming end so⦠fast?â
âSorry to disappoint.â His mom stood before him, waving a bottle of cashew wine. âSince I travelled all this way, I thought youâd like to have a drink with your mother.â
He glanced past her. The hallway was empty. âWhereâs Stella?â
âOh, sheâs too young to hang out with an old fuddy-duddy like me. And since I wasted her time getting her to come here and meet you, I figured I could arrange a nice little date for her.â
âA date?â Both eyebrows hiked. âWith who?â
âOne of your cameramen.â
âAnd she agreed to that?â
âWell,â Sharon scratched her chin, âI didnât actually tell herââ
âMom.â Ellisâs voice was a warning growl.
She flinched. âItâs for her own good. I promise.â
âWhen will you learn to stop meddling?â
âWhen you and Gerry give me grandkids that I can fuss over instead.â With a flounce of her skirt, she knocked past him and strode into his apartment. âWhy did you expect Gerry instead of me? I heard they were filming until midnight.â
âHow do you know that?â
âShaka was telling me about the script. The writers seem determined to get some romantic bedroom scenes between those two.â
Ellis flicked his gaze upward. âAre you taunting me?â
âI would never.â Sharon plodded through the kitchen, opening drawers and bumping them shut with her hip. âDo you think I have to ring room service or can we find a wine opener here?â
âIâll do it.â He took the bottle from her and popped the cork, imagining that he was wringing Lucienâs thick neck.
âPerfect! Now can you find some glasses?â
Ellis sighed but dutifully went in search of cups.
âAs I was saying,â Sharon perched on the sofa and unwound her scarf from her neck, âit seems youâve gotten yourself into a nice little web, my son. The woman you love has to pretend to be in love with her ex-boyfriend. And you canât do anything about it because youâre not supposed to be dating her in the first place. What a pickle.â Sharon studied him intently. âAre you sure now is the best time to pursue her, Ellis? Canât you wait until the showâs over?â
âNo.â
âNo?â She arched an eyebrow. âArenât you worried about the consequences if youâre caught?â
âOf course Iâm worried.â He put the cork back on the wine since his mom seemed more interested in talking than drinking. âBut Iâve already lost my job.â
She squinted at him.
âIâve already lost my reputation. Iâve already lost everything.â
âHuh? Iâm not understanding.â
âI mean, Iâve played out all the ways that being with Gerry can hurt me professionally.
