CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Ellis placed the ice pack on the bed when he heard the knock on the door. He’d taken some pain pills, but the verdict was in. He wouldn’t be capable of anything more than cuddling with Gerry tonight.

He was starting to sense a pattern of destruction here—starting with slamming into Gerry on their first day of filming and now the hammock incident. But even if it meant risking further harm, Ellis would still do anything to spend time with her.

He eagerly threw the door open. “How did filming end so… fast?”

“Sorry to disappoint.” His mom stood before him, waving a bottle of cashew wine. “Since I travelled all this way, I thought you’d like to have a drink with your mother.”

He glanced past her. The hallway was empty. “Where’s Stella?”

“Oh, she’s too young to hang out with an old fuddy-duddy like me. And since I wasted her time getting her to come here and meet you, I figured I could arrange a nice little date for her.”

“A date?” Both eyebrows hiked. “With who?”

“One of your cameramen.”

“And she agreed to that?”

“Well,” Sharon scratched her chin, “I didn’t actually tell her—”

“Mom.” Ellis’s voice was a warning growl.

She flinched. “It’s for her own good. I promise.”

“When will you learn to stop meddling?”

“When you and Gerry give me grandkids that I can fuss over instead.” With a flounce of her skirt, she knocked past him and strode into his apartment. “Why did you expect Gerry instead of me? I heard they were filming until midnight.”

“How do you know that?”

“Shaka was telling me about the script. The writers seem determined to get some romantic bedroom scenes between those two.”

Ellis flicked his gaze upward. “Are you taunting me?”

“I would never.” Sharon plodded through the kitchen, opening drawers and bumping them shut with her hip. “Do you think I have to ring room service or can we find a wine opener here?”

“I’ll do it.” He took the bottle from her and popped the cork, imagining that he was wringing Lucien’s thick neck.

“Perfect! Now can you find some glasses?”

Ellis sighed but dutifully went in search of cups.

“As I was saying,” Sharon perched on the sofa and unwound her scarf from her neck, “it seems you’ve gotten yourself into a nice little web, my son. The woman you love has to pretend to be in love with her ex-boyfriend. And you can’t do anything about it because you’re not supposed to be dating her in the first place. What a pickle.” Sharon studied him intently. “Are you sure now is the best time to pursue her, Ellis? Can’t you wait until the show’s over?”

“No.”

“No?” She arched an eyebrow. “Aren’t you worried about the consequences if you’re caught?”

“Of course I’m worried.” He put the cork back on the wine since his mom seemed more interested in talking than drinking. “But I’ve already lost my job.”

She squinted at him.

“I’ve already lost my reputation. I’ve already lost everything.”

“Huh? I’m not understanding.”

“I mean, I’ve played out all the ways that being with Gerry can hurt me professionally.
