“Know thyself.”

Inscription on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi

Chapter Sixty-eight

Sunday nine p.m., The Haddad summer cabin, west of Olympia

Kurt put his head under the kitchen sink faucet and rinsed away the excess dye. Once the water ran clear, he turned off the taps and began toweling his hair dry. “How’s it look?” he asked.

Theodora studied him. “That dark red makes you look very different.”

Kurt smirked. “It’ll get me to Canada.”

Theodora stroked his arm. “You’ll help me finish here first?”

Kurt nuzzled her neck. “Yeah. Got a plan?” He reached down and cupped her buttocks, pulling Theodora in close.

She smiled up at him. “I always have a plan.” She stepped back from Kurt’s embrace and took him by the hand. “I thought we’d try the rocking chair.”

Kurt grinned as she led into the cabin’s living room. Theodora began laying out her plan as he undressed. “We’ll watch the news tonight to see if there’s anything more on Edna’s daughter. I’ll check the video posting for comments. Tomorrow morning I’ll head into the college campus, and connect with Dr. Anderson.”

Theodora gave a naked Kurt a slight push to seat him in the bentwood rocker. She briskly peeled off her shirt and dropped her slacks.

As she unhooked her bra, she added, “He’s a scientist. I’ll talk up how important it is to get blood samples and a proper genetic evaluation. If I’m confident and sincere, I can get him on my side to do the workup on Edna and his wife.”

Theodora stepped out of her underwear and smirked when she saw Kurt’s erection. “My, my. It looks like we’ve got Vlad the Impaler tonight.”

She raised one leg and placed it on the arm of the rocker. Kurt guided his shaft into her as she moved her other leg up. The interlocked pair began to rock the chair, with Theodora thrusting herself forward and Kurt using his long legs to balance and push back. Their rocking action picked up speed.

Across the water of Oyster Bay, a retired physician was walking his aging Labrador in the dark. An odd, ongoing flicker caught the man’s eye and he stopped to stare across the water to the Haddad’s cabin. Hadn’t Leo said that he and Jana were going to Paris and then to a niece’s wedding?

The physician stopped to watch the flickering shadows from the Haddad’s cabin. A light was on in the living room of the cabin. Something was moving. Could a family of raccoons be causing havoc? Why the light? Motion activated? Surely there wasn’t a bear in the cabin. Jana was fastidious as hell. She would never leave food out. As the doctor ran through possibilities, the aging Labrador pulled on the leash. The old man gave into to the wishes of his dog. He’d walk over to Leo’s in the morning, and see if animals had gotten into the cabin.
