SANJA

Wind tore at my hair, whipping at my face like icy hands as Moyen ripped me from the palace gardens. I might have screamed as the world faded and my feet lost the ground, and my limbs might have thrashed in Moyen’s grasp.

The in-between swallowed us, and I was dragged along almost like in a deja vu of the day Moyen had snatched me from the library. Tears stung my eyes as her fingers dug into my wounds, and panic had me in an iron grasp.

Breathe, I told myself. Breathe, in and out.

I followed my own instructions, my vision focusing and the grayness around me turning into blurry details of the world speeding past as Moyen heaved us through it.

To the Crow King.

Something came back to life inside my chest, and at the back of my mind, I remembered that I wasn’t the helpless human she’d tried to abduct a few months ago. I’d gotten away then, and I could get away now.

With everything I had, I concentrated on the cream and gold of Rogue’s bedroom. My chest tingled, and I was tempted to close my eyes to focus better, but I kept them open, remembering Moyen’s words.

I threw myself against the female, shoving her off course so we wouldn’t arrive at her planned destination before I could break free. Moyen cursed and hissed as my power slammed into her, reinforcing my physical efforts.

Then I was free-falling. The in-between rushed past me like a gushing river, glimpses of first leaves and soil knitting together with houses of wood and stone. And then, the palace.

“Rogue’s bedroom,” I murmured to myself. “Rogue’s bedroom. Rogue’s bedroom.”

The palace wall came closer, glimmering stone taunting me to squeeze my eyes shut so I wouldn’t see the impact coming if I crashed into them. But I held them open.

“Rogue’s bedroom,” I repeated one last time.

My feet hit the hardwood floor of my mate’s room, and I toppled over, landing on my hip and shoulder before I could catch myself with my injured arms. The plush carpet buffered my fall, and I rolled onto my back, panting from the effort.

I’d done it. I’d site-hopped.

I allowed myself a moment of triumph before I shot back to my feet, rushing to the balcony that oversaw the gardens. “Clio!” I shouted, catching myself on the railing.

By the fountain, four of the guards lay lifeless in puddles of blood. Between them, the bodies of three Crows—one missing both wings and one leg.

No sign of Clio.

I rushed back into the room, right for the door, screaming into the hallway for guards as I ran for the stairs.

The sound of boots on stone announced the group of soldiers before they met me at the next turn, eyes wide and weapons ready.

“What’s wrong, Your Majesty?” one of them asked. I recognized her as the female who’d talked to me when she’d escorted me through the palace.

“There was an attack in the gardens.” I stumbled over my own words as I started running again, down the stairs toward the backdoor leading to the gardens.
