Chapter 11

Access and other small mercies

Damian did serious overtime. He mapped the whole infrastructure of the drones and finally received Harald’s jammer paper, keeping him busy by having him work on an implementation protocol. He promised to do this from home and left the office with most day shifters at eight. The night shift took over, but that was outside of the small realm Damian had secured for his operations. He had all doors locked. Officially he didn’t consider the floor secure enough, but with no other employees at his disposal so far, it meant he had the office for himself.

He wrote messages to several Siren guys he knew were capable, including Wu. The guy had lost everything because of him and had been sidetracked to the Philippines or some other meaningless office. He would be open to talking about a job in Europe. He replied first. Asked what it was about.

UNLIMITED BUDGET ON AN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT. INSIDE JOB. Damian wrote.

FOR WHO? Wu asked.

Damian smiled.

SIF AG. GREET THEIR NEW DIRECTOR OF CYBERSECURITY.

There was a break before he replied. YOU BASTARD. CLIMBED UP THE LADDER, DIDN’T YOU? OKAY, I’M IN IF THE PAYMENT IS ALRIGHT.

Damian smiled. I’LL DOUBLE YOUR CURRENT ONE.

I’LL SEND MY LETTER. ARRANGE TRAVEL. Wu answered.

Damian leaned back and nodded. A success to show after barely two days. Too good to be true.

Then he waited, drinking a tea or whatever it was the highly artificial drink tried to emulate in taste. It was exactly 2200 when his true plan was executed. Five SIF drones were hacked at the Polish border. They did disturb the current ongoing operations by stunning several clients, so the company went to red alert. Cybersecurity would be more than busy now. Cypher’s plan had said it would be twenty in both Poland and Italy, but as it remained five, he assumed something had gone wrong and decided to execute anyway.

He would ask Jigsaw about it later.

In his backpack, he had the cable and decoder to access his brain implant. It was impossible to smuggle Daedalus through the firewall of the main server, but he was already on the inside and was carrying the load inside his head. He connected and bypassed all AI security protocols. That was the tricky part he would need to explain later. To justify it, he ran several security routines, doing an automated penetration test. Then he connected his implant, and thanks to the almost unlimited access Wessels had given him, he reached the main update routine. He began uploading the specific modification of Daedalus that Cypher had provided and embedded it into the architecture, to be activated by a single command to any drone or data node. It took him an hour, and all of SIF was hacked.

It was almost too easy, but he realized the true mercy had been him being hired, while this was only the result of that very stupid decision by Wessels.

He sealed the access node, deleted the certificate and reactivated the AI guard. Then he leaned back in his office and emptied the disgusting drink.
