“I’ll have you know, Agent Davies, that I have never been too fond of working with participants under witness protection,” Hughes stated after she and Davies were safely behind the closed door of her office.

“No?”

From her seated position behind her desk, Hughes straightened her posture in her chair. She glanced down at the disclosure order that had been hand delivered shortly before Davies’ arrival. Though Hughes was not pleased with the court-issued order, she succeeded in hiding her discontent. “Don’t misunderstand. It has nothing to do with the patients themselves, rather the stipulations that obligate me to disclose things that would, under normal circumstances, remain confidential.”

“But you knew Kelli was high profile before you took her on. If you had a problem with the protocol, why did you agree to treat her?”

Hughes smiled. “I didn’t. But then one day, this beautiful, scared teenager showed up at my office door begging me to treat her. One conversation was all it took.”

“When’s the last time you saw Kelli?”

Hughes didn’t have to think about the answer. “Last Wednesday. She usually comes in on Thursday afternoons, but she claimed that she was leaving town last Thursday, so I saw her a day earlier.”

“Does she have an appointment for tomorrow?” A logical question, Davies thought, considering it was Wednesday.

“No. Not until next week,” Hughes replied. She tilted her head to the right and her eyes narrowed slightly as the wheels in her head began to turn. “But you knew that, didn’t you?”

“Only the fact that she probably wasn’t going to be here tomorrow.”

“Agent Davies, I assure you that I have no reason to mislead you. Just because I’m treating her, doesn’t mean I’m going to lie to you. That would serve no purpose.”

“And how is Kelli’s treatment going?” Davies asked, steering the conversation back to a Q and A.

Hughes took notice. “Overall, Kelli has made some amazing breakthroughs. But sometimes, it really depends on the day, or the topic.”

“Which topics give her the most difficulty?” Davies questioned.

Hughes paused. She knew that this day might come, when she had to look an FBI agent in the eye and divulge the very things that Kelli had confided in her. Of course, Kelli was aware that this day might come as well, but based on Agent Davies’ sudden appearance coinciding with Kelli’s absence, Hughes had to assume that Kelli was unaware of Davies’ visit.

Hughes took a breath before she continued. “Her family, her life in Boston, her sexuality and her expression thereof, and of course, the loss of her best friend, Francine.”

“Makes sense,” Davies said. “I’d like to ask you questions about all of those things, but first, can you tell me if Kelli has developed any new hobbies over the last year or so.”

“Specifically?”

“Photography, and marksmanship.”

Hughes eyes widened. It was an outward expression she tried to stifle. But it was too late. Davies had seen her reaction at the mention of the two hobbies. She knew that Davies wouldn’t relent until she revealed what she knew.

“I know that she had become quite interested in photography recently.
