In the autumn of 1910, after yet another sequence in the now established pattern of acrimonious separation, passionate reconciliation and a further bitter quarrel, Fournier confessed to his sister:

As soon as we’d loved one another, she gave up everything for me. On some days, when her business was slack, she would have just twelve sous to live off. She’d always do without dessert to make the money go further.

She had other lovers some years ago. A man committed suicide on her account. In the past, she’d been flighty, spiteful and wilful: for me, she’d go down on her knees in the kitchen and scrub the floor.

There was something childlike yet tragic about her which excited me. I don’t think I ever felt deep love for her, it was more a violent attraction.

She was very beautiful and remarkably intelligent. She had nearly all the best qualities.

Except purity. And that’s why I hurt her so much. When I think back, I wonder how she stood for so long all that I inflicted on her. She never seemed to tire of my cruel reproaches, my cruel failure to be satisfied, my cruel longing for purity.

I’ve left her five or six times already, for a day, five days, a week. I’d walk out because of something she’d said or something she’d be reminded of. Then she’d beg me to go back and back I’d go …11
