Chapter 18 We Like You

As we drove slowly over the dirt toward the garage, pulling the trailer behind us, Jane started getting back into her jumpsuit. She was still unzipped and rumpled.

I said, “Jane, my love, I hate to see you put those away.”

She smiled and said, “You like them that much?”

I said, “Indeed I do.”

Anne was just opening the door as I pulled up. I assumed that Kay had called her and told her we were on our way. Kay and I pulled the new ATVs to a stop in front of the entrance.

We all got out of the vehicles, and Kay, smiling, said, “We should get the trailers unloaded here and then pull them to the back. They won’t all fit in the garage. The small cart can pull the trailers if they are empty. I guess we park that in the back too.”

Anne said, “So, these two pretty beasts and the bikes in the garage. Oh! What is this baby? Who picked this out?”

I said, “The road bike? That was for Jane. She told me I couldn’t live without it. Specifically that I wouldn’t live long if I didn’t get it for her.”

Anne laughed and said, “I doubt that. Elle is starting dinner. She has to take a shower first. She has been gardening and working on the well-water system. I’ll get this unloaded and take care of the trailers. Alex, are you OK?”

I said, “I’m great. We had a great trip.”

Jane said, “Before I forget, there’s something that I wanted to tell Anne.”

Anne stopped and asked, “What? Jane, we haven’t really talked yet. What can I do for you?”

Jane said, “Anne, I want to say that you are very pretty.”

Anne said, “So are you. They made me kind of different, I guess. I haven’t really even looked at myself in the mirror yet.”

Jane said, “I want to be there when you do. We’re all very beautiful, but it’s important to me that you know that I think that you’re very pretty. You have a very wonderful face. Very thoughtful and genuine. I’m glad to be with you.”

Anne seemed touched somehow.

She said, “Um, Jane, that’s sweet. I’m not exactly what I appear to be, I’m afraid.”

Jane said, “Ah, but you are. You appear to be a very lovely, pretty, wonderful girl, and I’ll set straight and send packing anyone who says otherwise. They will be summarily banished as liars and shunned by the entire population.”

Anne grinned and said, “The population of five?”

Jane said, “Yep. They will be shunned by all five of us. But Anne, I mean it. You are very pretty. And for so many reasons, we’re lucky to have you with us.”

Anne said quietly, “Um, thank you. That’s really nice of you. I don’t know what to say. Some things happened before I got here, and…”

Jane said, “And I’ll be happy to sit and listen to you tell me all about it for as long as it takes. Anne, you are loved and very special. We all are.
