People talk about finding your lifeâs passion, and thatâs great, but from the point of view of emotional energy maybe itâs just a little too grandiose for most of us. Anything thatâs hard to find, hard to balance with the rest of your life, can be more intimidating and draining than energizing.
So I talk about keeping your flywheel spinning. All that means is that thereâs something youâre interested in, that you care about, that gives you emotional energy. Thatâs your flywheel, and everyone can benefit from having one. I got the term from a mechanical deviceâoften itâs a big, heavy spinning disk like in your carâs transmissionâthat stores energy and then gives it back to you when you need it. When I was a kid my favorite thing in the playground was the little merry-go-round the kids would push until it was going as fast as it could, and then weâd all jump on. That merry-go-round was a flywheel. Because it was so heavy and big, it took a while to get going, but once it got going, it would keep on going. Weâd laugh and laugh. It was so much fun.
We all need a flywheel. If youâre a high-energy person, you definitely have one: something youâre passionately interested in. Itâs always present in your life. Whatever else is happening, when you connect with your interest, and do something about it, it gives you energy. It doesnât matter what it is. It might be something that seems stupid to others. But if youâre getting energy from it, whatâs stupid about that? Itâs having the love that counts, not what the love is for.
