The work farm is hard labor. We are being treated like slaves, but I don’t complain or even care, because my sights are set on something far more important.

I am going to find out who is at the very top of the Intergalactic Union, and I am going to break them.

I have already figured out that the work farm is closely monitored by cameras. I can see them everywhere—inside the meager dwelling, the barns, even hovering in drones above the fields. I assume that we are being constantly and carefully watched over by the Union in the event that we try to escape or otherwise wreak havoc. I can just picture Pschye sitting there at her thin little desk with her equally-as-thin-lipped smile as she watches me toil over the fields to feed her stomach and the looms to weave her stupid dresses. There isn’t even a need for most of this now. With the technology that the Union possesses, machines can do these jobs in far less time and with far greater efficiency, but that is not the point. The point is punishment and humiliation.

Over our meager dinner, after a hard day of slaving on the farm in yet another rainstorm that made me soggy all the way down to my undergarments, I decide it’s time to break the hell out of here.

“I’ve been watching the guards,” I whisper to Petra and Vira as they eat the chunk of stale bread and salted meat that we were given as rations. “I know when each of them takes their breaks, and I know their shift rotation by heart. There is a gap of a few minutes between the shift change overnight. That is the time to escape.”

“You can’t escape here,” Petra says again. “There are kill traps set everywhere. You step on one of those, and you’re dead.”

“I know where they are.”

“That’s impossible. You can’t possibly know where all the traps are.”

“I do. I’ve been watching the pattern that the guards walk. They carefully avoid the places where there are kill traps. I know the rotations by heart and the safe patterns of ground at the edge of the work farm.”

“Please don’t tell us that you’re going to risk trying to escape.” Vira frowns. “I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

“I am going to try to escape—tonight,” I say in a hushed voice. “And I need the two of you to stay behind and cover for me. I promise I will come back to get you if I don’t wind up getting caught and killed.”

“And there’s no way we can talk you out of this foolish plan?” Petra asks.

I shake my head.

“All right, we’ll help,” she answers for them both. “But if you manage to survive this, you had better not forget about us and leave us here to rot.”

“Of course I won’t!” I say, surprised that she would even think that.

We wait until the shift change. It’s just a few minutes before the next rotation, so we don’t have much time.
