Chapter 9

Bang, Bang, Bang, I woke up and took a moment to just lay in bed, it felt so peaceful to just lay there, Bang, Bang, Bang, “Jack get out here or we’ll be late!” So very peaceful. I got out of bed and put my armor on, Bang! Bang! Bang! life really was something, I had the power to kill any normal man with ease and yet all I wanted was to sleep, to rest, to be at peace, Bang! Bang! Bang!

I opened the door, to see an impatient looking Eli, “Hurry up! We don’t want to be late!”

I stepped through, closed the door, and started walking down the steps, “You ever wonder what the point of all this is? Why not just live at an inn?”

Eli groaned, “Pull yourself together, you’re delirious. How many cups of ale did you have last night? I only saw you with one.”

I stepped off the final step to see Alice sitting at a table in the practically deserted inn, “It was just the one, I don’t know what I’m saying, it’s just so early, look,” I pointed to a window, “it’s still dark outside.”

Eli shoved me towards Alice’s table, “Sit down and eat something. You’d better be yourself when we get to the arena, because we need the all-mighty Dark Lord Jack, not the delirious Jack.”

I took a seat and Alice passed me a plate of toast and a cup of milk. I ate, and gradually my mind sharpened. It had been fun to ramble on about nonsense, it had certainly annoyed Eli, but now it was time to focus. I stood, “Let’s go then, we don’t want to be late.”

Exiting the inn we walked down the dark street, large torches burned every twenty or so feet, but with my night vision they were useless. We arrived at the arena where a line of people were entering a door on the side of the arena wall, my companions bid me good luck then walked off towards a tent pitched next to the arena, where I assumed bets were being placed.

I joined the line and the elderly man from before came over with a clipboard, nodding to me he jotted something down before moving to the next person in line. I walked with the line through the doorway and into a rather large circular room with a table in the center, a moment later a tall man entered the room through a side door, “Welcome, participants of the free-for-all, I am your host, Malazan.”

The man, Malazan, continued speaking, “Let’s form a circle around this table so I can inform you of a few things before you enter the arena.”

We moved, forming a circle around the table. Malazan stood directly across from my position next to the table, he waved his hands over the table and a map appeared on it. There were gasps of amazement around the room, for this was no ordinary map, the map showed an arena divided by a river, on one side was a small forest and on the other was an equally small desert.
