Be flexible on the time and don’t advance the slides too abruptly. The goal for younger students is standing up in front of a screen and talking while facing the audience. Using paper notes with one or two key points is acceptable.

Immediate feedback is imperative for student growth.

Chapter 18

Digital Class Book EduProtocol

Shared writing inspires stories, and stories are fun to write! But have you ever considered creating a class math or history textbook, complete with diagrams and samples? Class books can span the grade levels and subjects. The iBook textbook, Math Our Way, by the students of Mr. Smith, Mr. Black, and Mr. Lehotay, is a great example of a shared content book.

The idea for fiction class books was originally developed from my (Marlena’s) experience teaching kindergarten many years ago. We started with the model of a repetitive story such as Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow. Then each student recreates a page using their own idea for the extension of the story. The students loved creating the books and loved reading them in the class library. At the end of the year, each student would take home one of the books.

We love this protocol because using a slide format allows for a wide variety of standards-aligned topics in any grade, and the books are easily published in a class website, creating a virtual class library.
